Winter Solstice

Today  is the darkest day of the year as the earth begins its tilt back toward  the sun and the days begin to grow light a bit longer.     This first day of winter is always a good sign for me.  I love the light and know how important it is to the existence of life.   It will be a month before the days have an hour more light time, but just the thought of more potential sunshine makes me feel good.

This week there was a FAB meeting at Judy’s home.  She has decorated for the return of all of her children and grandkids.   I am sure a good time will be had by all.  Patti was the only one with work to share and her afghan is   a gift that she will  be passing off soon.IMG_0047   I hope this season brings joy and delight to all my readers.

Progress Report: ZAP IT  This work is 37.5”w X 55”l.     It is a rework of an older piece that  now  has the words “Zap It” in purple appliqued on top  of the old base.   IMG_0062  The new lettering was stitched down in silver thread in a big zig-zag pattern.   IMG_0063  I enjoyed the process.

ACE   I created this new bit of graffiti  form this week and it is now fused down to the base.  I will begin to applique it down this week.

 

 

 

 

 

Ethel Scrap IMG_0060I keep working away on this project.  It is more than half assembled now.    It will be completed soon.

New Work  I pulled the wood cuts and stenciled pieces out this piece this week and  and built the rectangles around them.   It is now ready for the machine work.   This work is my last tribute to Ethel as the block print and the stencil work is hers.  I do enjoy finishing off her piece but it is bitter sweet. Hand work    I have started doing the hand work on this whole cloth project.  I have no plan except to use the yarns and threads in the color pallet in various stitches.    It is my news work  project.  The big brown circle is a ball  of yarn that I am cotching- and it will become a line  as I go forward.

Hello,

As the wreath shows I am doing holiday work now.   I had a great time creating this wreath and it is festive, but it is too thick to fit between the door and the storm door!    I am so silly I did not even consider  that possibility.   It will have to hang inside some where.

I have been thinking a lot about rules and regulations lately.    I think those thoughts are  related to our recent  snow, because two rules     like alternate street side parking so the snowplows can do their work and  clearing the sidewalks are two seasonal things that have come up.    One tends to forget little items like those  rules  when there is not any snow.  So some rules usefulness come and go.     But rules in general are what makes for a smooth running society.     One can be still be  put into situations where they do not know what is expected of them and what to expect from others.   But in general rules of  self control  and kindness usually are good ones to use to go forward even in unusual  settings.   Expecting everyone around you to follow the rules of the road sure make moving around  a less hazardous activity.   But to every rule there are times when one must respond to the environments of that time and place.    One must be flexible and allow for changes and exceptions to rules at time too.

Progress Report: Christmas Banners   My good friend Regina gave me some beautiful machine embroidered blocks last month.   I had a good time putting them together in three small banners this week.   My daughter saw them before they were assembled and she really liked  them too and asked me for a set. IMG_0016       So now that they  in groups.  I will pass one onto  her and keep the smaller ones.   I already have spaces on my walls for these two for this season.IMG_0020

 

ZAP    This work is 37”w X 56”l.   I enjoyed doing all the hand applique of the bubble “IT’S”  on the top of the Zaps to break up the negative spaces here.  IMG_0026 The work is reflective quilted with the circles added as I went along.  IMG_0029

Zap It   This  rework project is almost done.    I decided that the quilt was ok- but nothing more then that.  So I added  the dark purple strips to spell out   “Zap it” on top.  Now  I have stitched over the dark purple lines sense  the rest of the work is quilted already.   I am still toying with the idea of adding more stitched lines in purple on top.IMG_0010  I think I need to set it aside for a while and then look again with fresh eyes in a week or two.

New workIMG_0022I pulled out the last pieces of work that I inherited from Ethel( the black stencil stuff and the  tree) and found some fabric to work with those pieces.   I will move onto it next.

Thanksgiving 2017

 

Hello-

I hope you enjoyed the holiday.  Our family went off to the Turning Stone Casino for the  big buffet.   We  all had a good time and over ate a bit I am sure.   I really liked this ice sculpture turkey.

IMG_9878 I went off to visit with Regina Tuesday and we had a good time talking and sharing ideas.  We always get so excited that very little work gets done- the the ideas really flow.  She kindly gave me a Christmas present in the form of a dozen Christmas blocks that I will enjoy putting together into a season piece.   She does wonderful machine work.  The more I know about that  process the more I respect folks who do it.   It requires a different set of skills than I possess.

I am working away preparing for a Trunk Show at the Schweinfurth Art Center on Sunday at 2:00.   Going through old work is exciting and stressful.    I am also seeing patterns in my subject choices and  I will use that idea to pull  the talk together.   I did sort out a whole pile of stuff to pass on while I was pulling work for the talk.  Now to organize it in a meaningful  arrangement.

 Progress Report: Peeling Orange  I am now doing reflective quilting on this work  and trying to decide what way is up.  I finished all the satin stitch applique on Monday.

 

 

 

 

 

ZAP  IMG_9866 In this work  the contrasting shapes are all appliqued down now.   I decided it  needs an “add on” so I made a new graffiti to add to it.

IMG_9871It   I cut a stencil for the word ” it” as I thought I could add it to the ZAP work.  I made a bunch yesterday and they are drying now.  IMG_9869I hope to cut them out and add them too the Zap top.    This is a  true visual decision that can only be made visually.

Scarf  I finished my new muffler last eve.  Then as usual, I found the lost one this morning when I was looking for gloves.  It is good to have a back up.

IMG_9881Glyph IV    The beading goes on.   I am working on the bottom of the” L” now.

Trickster Card  I was thinking about how the Native Americans often use the coyote as a trickster in their stories.   Folks really identify with a smaller clever animal in their fight for shrivel against  powerful odds.

Open Studio Weekend

 

Hello,

This week I went off to an open studio week end at the Schweinfurth.  I worked in the wet studio with six other gals.   The first image is of the screen work I did on Sat.  I stared out doing Shobori with Liz.   We did four colors- orange, yellow, green and purple.IMG_9764   Everything worked well except the purple where I used a fabric that was only partly cotton and so it did not take the dye as well as I would have liked.     I still have a lot of fabric that is batching so there will be more next week.  IMG_9774Susan did some wonderful stuff as did Cheri.IMG_9770  Maureen worked on sox and other linens  she hopes to sell at the Plow Shears show  in early Dec.  Victoria did some nice work too.   We all had fun  and I came home exhausted.

Progress Report: Whirlwind This work is 30” w X 45” l.   It took several tries to get the edges strait on this one.    IMG_9829   I really like all the movement in this work.

Ethel’s Scrap   I continue to work away on this piece.  I finished row 5 yesterday and there are only nine so I am more than half done with this step.

 IMG_9814Zap  I had to remove the first applique as it caused a lot of ripples.   In doing the second two panels, I will add the inner facing and   tear away before I stitch to begin with- that will make the piece flatter and go a bit faster too.

Peeling Orange    I am zig-zagging the parts down on this one  and thinking about how I want to quilt it as I go.

Glyph IVIMG_9820I have been gone so much this week that I have not  done much work on this  project.   But I did put in a few hours and time is what it takes now.

 Card: Celebrate  As the holidays draw near I think about how important friends and family are to me and want to toast them with this card.

Travel and such

  •  I have had a busy two weeks.   It all started out with traveling and visiting museums .   Marty and I visited  six different ones on our trip to Maine and back.   With  shopping, a factory tour and visiting with friends it was all very exciting and stimulating- A very enjoyable experience.   But before I went away there was a three day workshop with Amanda McCavour.   She  is an expert on the use of various water soluble materials.  I learned a lot.  She has a show  of her life sized machine drawn rooms on display at the Schweinfurth  that will run from now until the first week end in Jan.   Most of the work we did in class was much smaller. This shot is of Cheri’s peacock feather. IMG_9633 I experimented  with   creating Fox Tail for use in one of my felted pieces.     Doing this workshop with fifteen others creative women made for lots of different and  exciting applications  to the use of this material.
  • The Quilts =Art= Quilts  2017 opened on Sat at the Schweinfurth too and so I went to the opening as I was already in the building.  This work is by Elizabeth Bush.  She won a Jurors Choice award as did  my friend, Julia.   IMG_9647This work by Emily was done by one of the other gals in Amanda’s class.  She came all the way fro California to be at the opening and to take the class.    It’s a strong show and I plan at least three more visits.

Then on Monday morning with the help of Cheri, Julia and Liz we hung a Finger Lakes Fiber Artist show at May Memorial Church  3800 Genesee St, in Syracuse.  This shot is of  a work by Sharon.  IMG_9658  These works show  two quilts  by Regina and a piece by Alice.     There was a Meet the Artist event on Sunday and that went well.   The contact at  May was very pleased.

  Marty and I  visited the Sherborn Museum  as one of our early stops on our trip to Maine.  We were blown away by the work of Patty Yoder who did wonderful hooked wall pieces.  She raised the sheep, sheared them, spun the wool and dyed it before she cut it into strips to create  beautiful and playful wall pieces with it.  IMG_9677  This is a close up of the eye of the sheep in the first photo.     There was lots of humor and  fun in  this  delightful show and we enjoyed it very much.

  • IMG_9695Our next  stop was the Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream factory.  We took the tour and had ice cream Sundays for lunch that day.    I  Loved their motto” If it’s not fun- why do it?”
  • IMG_9709 We went on to visit our friend  Elizabeth.  We enjoyed visiting her studio and talking about her work.  This shot is of a colorful basket full of the hats she makes to give away at Christmas.
  • IMG_9713  The next day we went on to Camden to visit with Barb and Steve.  Barb took us to Rockland and the Farnsworth museum.  We hurried through the Wythe art  works as we had seen them  before and went to a great show of wok by Marguerite Zorach.   No photos where allowed, but take my word for it – the works was fabulous.    The photos is of the black and white show, another temporary exhibit that was up in the museum.  We also visited  the  Center for Maine Contemporary Art.     The last museum we visited before we drove home  was  the Clark, where we saw the exhibit of Impressionist Line and  listened to the lecture on that subject.   I did not know that pastels were invented around the same time those artists were working.  Degas and Mary Cassatt sure used that new material.
  • Tuesday was the first one of November so I had both the QuEG’s meeting and the Diva meeting.   This quilt is by Liz and will be for sale at the Everson’s  Christmas Tree event.   IMG_9737 Angela continues to work away at her on line felting class.  I really like this piece.    Sally is busy with Christmas gifts for her grand daughtersIMG_9742and Sue Ellen is having fun doing cats.
  • The Divas had a good meeting as well.  Regina did a splendid job Finishing off her Garden Gate piece.  I love how she combined  a rubbing with a hand dyed to get this great look.IMG_9747Maureen is working with colored pencils and stitching on this piece.  Most folks had work in various stages of completing in preparation for the Thread of Change Show at the Unitarian Church in Ithaca  to open Dec 1.
  • The to round things out I had a FAB meeting yesterday.   Judy is working away on her red sweater again now that it is cold.  Nancy is making “post cards”  to attach to her quilt.     It has been a full two weeks.

Progress Report:  Glyph IV  Because I was away not a lot of progress has been made here.  But I am working away to fill in the L with beads now.

Peeling Orange I have started zig –zagging down the  shapes on this project.   I am still thinking about how I want to quilt it.

IMG_9757Zap   I did start to applique the shapes down – but had to remove all I had done as it puckered up.  I purchased tear away and now I am ready to try again.

KnittingIMG_9763Winter cold has finally found us.  I could not find my muffler,   so I decided to knit one as I still have not focused on a evening hand project.

Felted work   I made this rock face a while back and thought that I would use the Fox  Tail from Amanda’s class on the surface.  But I think they are too close in value to get the effect I am shooting for.   So they will be a part of another project and I will work on a different idea for this piece.

IMG_9749 Label Card “ Share the credit.”  I have been thinking about how important  it is to work together for a big goal and value all the different things one brings to  projects.  I was trying to express that with this card.

Color every where

Hello-

I am enjoying the peak of fall color here.   The trees just seem to be burning with color.      I was hard pressed to choose a photos to use this time.

This week was a busy one.  There was a meeting of the Finger Lakes Fiber Artists on Sat.  I collected the quilts for the show I will be hanging for the group on Monday.

IMG_9542Marcia shared the new SAQA magazine and her work on a new jacket.    This is the small quilt  Pat shared with us.

IMG_9548Maureen is busy doing Indigo dyeing for her class with Jane Dunwald.    She is really mastering this technique.     Liz shared her projects form her class at the Barn.   She is learning  Shibori.   And  I am of  benefitting from this experience because we are doing more together.

Regina has been busy this month finishing things from her classes at QBL.    The triangles are from her class  with Rosalie Dace.     The quilt  at the top on the right is from Cynthia Corbin’s class.  IMG_9554   Noel is playing with different quilting and piecing techniques.   It was a very stimulating meeting with a varied group of creative gals.

IMG_9567We also  had a FAB meeting today.   Judy was working on a  baby quilt for her church.   We had our own little quilting bee as we tied it off before the end of the meeting.

 

Progress Report:Glyph IV  I am done with the beading on the W now.  That letter is the center so I feel like I have made progress.

 

IMG_9575Peeling Orange    I am to the point where I am zig –zagging down the  parts of this piece.   I will do all of this before I quilt it.

IMG_9581Spring Whirl Wind  ( Renamed from Tossed Salad as the blue does not work for salad. )      I am doing the line green with free motion quilting on this project.  I wanted to push the green back a bit.

New ScrapIMG_9574  I started building new blocks and pinning up possible layouts for the sixth quilt built from Ethel’s scrap box.    It may change as I have only made three rows of blocks and they are not connected.

Zap  I have cut the dark purple in  the ZAP  pattern.  I stitched the parts to the fabric and I even zig -zagged around the right one.  But it pulled and puckered up the fabric so much that I took all that stitching out and now there is inner facing on the back.  I will re do the zig zag before quilting.

Creative Assistants   Another new batch of silly little fellows.   I am working away during the football games.

 

Card- Some Days  This card is to celebrate having a day without any event.   Feeling a bit over done- I am going to plan some days like this in every week from now on.

I will be traveling next week so there will not be a post.  I will write all about it Nov. 9 .

Fall Events

This week was full of events.   Last weekend  I went off to the Tompkins Quilt guild show.  Cheri won a ribbon  there.  So too did my friend  Pat.  But this  red work is not the one she won a ribbon on.

IMG_9458 Regina and I enjoyed viewing the show and talking about what we saw.  My shots of Regina’s quilts are not good enough to share.

I went off to the Schweinfurt with Marty and we  vied the  Geologic Landscapes show on Wed..     This wall piece is of the watershed  of the lake.   The white lines are of the creeks and streams that feed into the lake and the white area near the top is the lake.   The outline  of the shape is of the highest elevations around the lake area.    I loved this concept as I have always liked topographical maps.

IMG_9489Then this morning was the FAB meeting.   Both Judy and Nancy are working on different variations of Disappearing Four Patch.   Judy’s is the one in dark blues and whites.   Nancy’s is the one with the greens in it.   It is great how unique they both are.

Patty  has finished her  extruded cotton  thread  knitted shawl.IMG_9492   I think it is great!

 

Progress Report: Buggy   This work is  40” w X 49.5” l.   The bugs are oil stitch on fabric  using my own designed and cut  stencils.   The gray and light green panels are made from stamps I cut in Pat Pauly’s  class at QBL two summers ago.    I dyed the dark green and the fabric with the turquoise and white in it too.   Liz had challenged me to use some of the stuff we have been creating and this one fills the bill.   IMG_9472The reflective quilting looks like bug trails one of my friends said.      These big black insects are based on cockroaches.   IMG_9473  The blue green insects are also beetles.

Quartered Glyph   This work is 44” w X  48” l.   I used a smaller version of the Owl Glyph pattern that I created to do this work.   IMG_9486  The quilting is strait line  starting from the center and working out  using variegated thread.   IMG_9488  The shapes of the glyph are raw edged  appliqued.

Glyph IV IMG_9467I just keep beading away on this project.     I like the effect, but progress is slow.

Tossed Salad  This quilt is made from all the cut away parts of Quartered Glyph.     I am machine stitching down the parts in the raw applique style here.   I have  added the back and batting too so this time I am quilting at the same time as I put the parts on.  I do not know if I will have to add additional machine lines until I am done with this step.

Pealing Oranges    This quilt is still growing.  I made a smaller Owl Glyph pattern and used a beautiful piece of orange fabric from Regina to place that pattern on.    It is being mixed with some of the other cut away fabrics from various other Glyph projects.  This is an early step in the process.

 

IMG_9469Wool Work   I have started doing free motion machine drawing on this felted work.  I am also tacking down bits of fabric and yarn with the machine stitches.

Card Confused   I build this card from multiple copies of the same image trying to mix and confuse the eve.  All the cutting and pasting made it warp a bit  but I think the confusion is there.  I sure feel that way about the world at large at the moment.

 

 

 

 

 

Pond Water IMG_9479   I am now  hand quilting on this project.  The horizontal quilt lines are  meant to give the impression of water patterns as well as hold it all together.

Label Quilt    This work is 95” X 95”.    I am now done with this weekly project.  It has been an enjoyable and calming evening daily work.  It took  me a week to finish each of the 144 squares.   I am now trying to decide  what the next daily practice project will be.

Water Main Break

  Hello,

One of the  big excitements for this week was a water main break on Sunday morning.   I was washing up after making muffins and suddenly no water came out of the tap.   I looked out the kitchen window to see the road full of muddy water.    I went out doors and discovered the gal across the street  had just called the water department. The water was bubbling up and running down the street- it overwhelmed the street drains  and ran all the way down to the park – four blocks away. IMG_9390  The water was so powerful it cracked and threw up the street.   The men came in about 20 min and turned off the water.  A little later they were followed by a  repair crew who started about 9.    First they broke up the tar via and cleared away all the mud and stone to expose the pipe so they could replace it.IMG_9393  The whole was about 8 feet deep and 10 feet wide.  It was huge.  They cut away the broken area of the pipe and then put in a new section.  It was about 3:30 by that time.   Then they began to fill in the whole with loads of stone.  It took four trips with dump trucks full to do that job.   Lastly after 9 in the evening they patched over the  filled opening with tar via.   There was lots of mud on the street and the street sweeper made five runs up and down the road to get it up on Monday – but it is still dusty here.

IMG_9437This shot of a side walk that got flooded and is still muddy this morning when I walked.   The street sweeper could not get to that space.   It was  quite and adventure.

FAB meant here last week too.  Marty came as she is in town.  She brought  her newest little project.IMG_9383

Patty had just finished a new scarf that she shared with us.  I think it is grand- only knit and pearl she tells us.   Judy brought one of her Disappearing Four Patch blocks that she started  up at camp when we were there. IMG_9382It was a good meeting and we all had fun.

The  first  Tuesday  of the month came this week so I had QuEG’s and Diva meetings too.

 

IMG_9398Angela is taking an on line class in felting and having a grand time.  She showed us about ten pieces she  had done already.  These two show different wools on the left and adding  different silks on top of the second one.Linda is finishing up this “ Almost Black and White “ top.   IMG_9406   Sally is working away on Christmas gifts and this bag she made was full of them- hand bags,   soft toy bags and such.  She dose great work.IMG_9404Corrine had this wonderful bracelet to share.  She made it from and exchange she did at a conference where she traded a great luggage tag for the charms.

 

  Before I went to the Diva meeting, I stopped and had a little private  visit to the Rock Garden Show in Homer.   Cheri and Terri- the gallery guru  show me through.   They both  had work there of course.   Cheri’s was one she started in the class she and I were in with Kerr at QBL.   IMG_9411   Terri’s work is much larger and full of texture.   It is a great little show with nine artists  and wonderful work.   IMG_9409  This work is Cheri’s too.

The Diva’s were hopping as well.   Lori had this wonderful little bag to share with us.  She did it for her entry for the Embroidery Guild of American  2017 challenge.   She got feed back on several other  stamped and hand dyed projects that she is working on.

 

 

 

 

Alice has  almost completed her Mary Colter quilt for the Woman Museum.    It looks great.

 

 

 

Liesa has  completed her quilt for the “Threads of Change  Show”.   Let Us Stay-is wonderful commentary I think.

IMG_9427Regina  wowed us again with all her indigo dyeing.  She is creating up a storm of beautiful work.

Anne has finished “ Blind In justice”   her work on the American’s with Disabilities Act.    All those brail dots are three dimensional.

IMG_9430 Ruth’s wave is moving along as she wants it finished for the  quilt show  this week end.     It was a powerful meeting and I enjoyed my self .  Came home all hipped up again.

The other thing I tried this week was dyeing with wall nuts.  IMG_9384It is great fun and I got some real nice browns.

Progress report: Buggy   I am to the reflective quilting stage on this project.  I  added two more oil stick stenciled insects to  it this week too.

Glyph IV  IMG_9449I just keep putting in my hour a day on this project.  It is moving forward.

Quartered Glyph   I started this one up  at camp.  I am ready to start assembling the  four units now that I have trimmed away the second layer.    The Cut aways are so beautiful that  I may need to do another  work using these shapes and  pieces. IMG_9450

Pond Water   This project has become my short term evening project.  I am hand quilting it so this is a good replacement for the time being.   I do have a new nightly project in mind however.

IMG_9432Card   Make Believe  This is my newest card.   I am so distressed by the shooting in Los Valgus that I want to escape into make believe.  Thank goodness I have art as a way of getting away into my own world .

Label Block quilt.  All the blocks are assembled now.   I will stitch in the ditch quilt it and finish the job.

NYC trip

Hello,

I went off to New York City this week with Sue Ellen  for three days.    It was great fun.  First we went to the Museum of  Craft and Design.  There  was  a different show on each level as usual.   They were mostly about light and sound.  It was fun and beautiful.IMG_9267The next stop was Central Park where we watched the pigeons as they enjoyed the sculptures too.   We walked to Time Square where we stopped in the M&M store.   I had to purchase Pumpkin Pie Flavored M& M’s.  I was amazed by the walls of choicesIMG_9263  Across from this on was another with eight shades of purple on it.

Friday we got up and went to the Bronx to the Botanical Garden  to see the   Chihuly show.     This ” Rods and Logs” sculpture was the fist we visited.   Then we walked  to the Native Plants garden to see this Boat.I really like the colors here  and the reflections.     We walked to the library and viewed his sketches and “Baskets”.  Even though the drawings were one three or four lines, it sure was a great testamentIMG_9285 for doing sketches before you begin a work.    This Ice Blocks  sculpture was in front of the Library.   We went to the greenhouse and looked  at more work.     I think I took as many photos of plants and flowers as I took photos of the glass.   In this last one  the glass and plants sure blend together nicely.   We visited the Succulent Garden  the Rose garden, the Lilac Garden, the Cherry Blossom Garden, and two waterfalls.    We rode the sub way back to 59th street where we got off and walked to a restaurant for dinner.   Then we went down to Time Square and the theatre where   we watched “Kinky Boots”.    We enjoyed our day  and we walked over 23,000 steps.    I will be hard pressed to beat that record.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Saturday we   got going and went south to the Whitney.   I liked the Calder display the most.  But I have been in love with mobiles sense I was in the  sixth grade when we made them in art class with Mrs. Fister. IMG_9349  After eating on the museum patio we walked the High Line Park   north.  It was a chance to get some great views of the city and the Hudson River as well as people watch.   We had a good time and I enjoyed myself a lot.

IMG_9366Tues I dyed again with Liz.    It is so much fun and relaxing to know we will be doing in again in a couple of weeks- so there is no pressure to do it all at one time.

Progress Report: Glyph VI  This work is 33” w X 43” l.   I quilted this one from the center out.  Each section is in a strait line in both directions.  I enjoyed working on this project.IMG_9378IMG_9377

Fractured Glyph This work is 32” w X 43” l.   This quilt is a made from the cut-aways from Glyph VI.   I pebble quilted in the green and gold areas, and reflective quilted the other areas.IMG_9371   This method of quilting means the raw edges are more rugged. IMG_9372

IMG_9362Glyph IV   I am still beading away on this project.  It is slow, but I am enjoying it.

Quartered  Glyph VII I started this project at Judy’s camp.   All the sections are  stitched together now and it is time to connect the units and begin the quilting.

IMG_9360Fall Card   I did this card  to celebrate Autumn  Solstice.  It is so beautiful here and I am enjoying being out doors.

Label Blocks   These are the last two blocks.  I still have labels- but I have run out of gas for this project.   I will make rows of blocks next.

 

IMG_9368I am going to build the back out of black and white fabrics.   So I started cutting today.

Fall Retreat

IMG_9193Hello,

I took this photo of the sun setting over the St Laurence  on Sat.   The FAB group had a weekend retreat at   Judy’s Camp last weekend.   Saturday we went out to dinner.   It was so enjoyable  to eat along the river and watch the many boats as they slipped by.

Patti worked away on her pillow case project.IMG_9206   She finished all but six of them.    Both Nancy and Judy worked on “Disappearing Nine Patch” projects.IMG_9208  This shot shows Nancy ready to do the first cut of her four patch.     We enjoyed our work time and in the evening we launched two paper lanterns IMG_9203over the lake.  They rose strait up until they reached the top of the ridge where the wind caught them and then they sailed north on a fast wind.  We all watched open  mouthed, until they  disappeared in the night.     It was a wonderful weekend and we all felt the it jump started us all for quilt work this fall.

Progress Report: Glyph II   This quilt is all done now .  It   is  the second one and where I really started the use of the negative space units that were cut from the back of the project.( the brow squared fabric)IMG_9223IMG_9224  I am enjoying this series.

 

Glyph IV   I continue to bead for an hour every day on this project.  It is coming along, but the progress is a slow one.

 

 

 

Glyph V     IMG_9220I am doing two different types of quilting on this project.   inside the green areas I am doing pebble quilting with green metallic thread.  In the blue, green and purple areas,  I am doing reflective quilting in a variegated thread.

IMG_9216Glyph VI  This quilt is all pinned in place and I am ready to start to quilt it.  I am however not sure about what style/type of quilting I want to use here.  I am just studying it now too.

Glyph  VII This is the project that I worked on at camp.  The four smaller glyph  patterns where designed to go together to create a four patch quilt.  I am now auditioning different layouts for this project.   I am not sure  if this is the final at this point,  but I feel it is the strongest so far.    I try one layout and live/look at it for a while and then take a photo and try another layout and repeat the process.   nothing is stitched down yet so I can make all sorts of changes.

IMG_9214Wind – Water  card   I am still trying to deal with my feelings about the newest hurricane- Irma.  Mother Nature sure has used her power of wind and water to remind us that  she still has the final say.

Creative assistants   I have now completed all the little fellows that have completed faces at this time.  I will now move back to the face creation step  in the process to move forward.

Capture scarvesIMG_9230   In cleaning up the studio space I opened a box that was full of these scarves.  All with out the fabric neck units on them.  Deciding I needed to finish the process I have done these black ones and red ones.  There are still a few to go so there will be more next time.   IMG_9232

Next week I will be in New York City for three days.  So there will be no Blog post until  Sept 24.
