Supporting a Friend

It’s a brisk 10 degrees out side this morning and the heat from my neighbors  chimney is clearly visibel.

 

 

My big event for this week was to be a support  a person for my friend  Noel at her Trunk show at the Schweinfurth  on Sunday.   Donna and Noel                      This shot is of Donna and Noel.

As it turned out most of the work was displayed on the walls and I only ended up holding a few pieces.   It was very impressive to see most of her wonderful  work  hanging  toghther.

QuiltsThese works represent years of effort on her part and they show how she has taken an idea that she loves and run forward with it playing with new color approaches and ides along the way. IMG_7065.jpg  She even explored using an artist’s work as  a jumping off place for some of her own work.   I sure cant tell what work is based on another artist.  A lot can be learned from this process.

IMG_7068.jpgShe dyes most of the silk she uses in her work too so there is an extra layer of personal involvement in what she does.   It is one thing to see works by others one and two at a time and quite a impressive and wonderful thing to see them all together.    I am glad she is a friend.

 

 

 

SpottedProgress Report: Spotted   This work is 39” X 38” and is one based on a collage.   I am seeing the end of this type of exploration for a while.  Doing one a month is not necessary any more.  IMG_7099Not only have I learned how to build a work without strait lines I feel my quilting has improved with this series of projects.  IMG_7101  I also feel more free in my approach to design.

Rred NebulaRed Nebula  I am getting ready for a solo show in Januray and  as a part of this process I am looking at older works.   I did this piece a while ago but did not finish it.   I decided to stretch it and add it to the mix of possible works for the show.IMG_7083   Working with older pieces and doing  this additional work makes me want to return to this subject and do further  exploration.

From Dry FallsFrom Dry Falls This work too is one I did  over a year ago.   When I check this piece for the stack of works to be considered I discovered that I had not stitched the label to the back.  So I had to do that to complete this project.IMG_7092My labels include the title, size, my name and add.

Pond Water
Under the Miscrope Close upo  This work has not had any attention for a few weeks and it too came to the top of the pile this week.  I am enjoying adding  embellishments to the top with hand stitches.  I have seven pieces that need hand work on them at this time so it may be a while before I finish this one.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Wild Patch  IMG_7072  This work is in the washer at the moment.  I have stitched all the patches to a solid purple background fabric with may raw edges on the top.  I want to see if the frayed parts add a texture that I can use and control in my work.

 

IMG_7077.jpgCircle Challenge I  This is a personal challenge I am working on.  I want to use circles as a stronger element in my work.  I am to the hand step here and the threads on top are what I am thinking about using for some big  hand stitched lines on top to hold the work together.

This is the second on in this challenge.  More circles and I am still using the cut away as a part of the design.   I will trim it to the same size as the first one.  Beyond that I have not made any decisions about this second work.  I know I will have to make some modifications as I am out of one of the fabrics in the circle section.

 IMG_7094 Dog quilt    Our local dog pound has called for little quilts to add to the metal cages that the dogs are put in to add to there comfort.  I had started the quilt, but lost my intention so it was just a top.  I thought it would do better to go to this cause then sent in the box of UFO’s.

Out of the Dark closeup 1Hello,

I feel so Positive when I think about my work.  I did a solo trunk show yesterday for the North Syracuse Art Guild titled

” Your Art /My Art”.  In that lecture/ trunks show,  I compared my work to the many styles and types of work that the members use.  In doing so I really realized how much I draw from the other  art categories to get my ideas across.  I draw  directly on the fabric with pencils, crayons and markers.  I use my machine as a drawing tool too.  I  New-IrisPaint  with acrylic,water color and dye on the surface when I need to create a special effect.   I print on the surface using  silk screens, stamping and stencils to get images I want on the work.POMEGRANATEcl4  I use some weaving techniques like felting, silk papers and frapping.    I often use collage techniques to build up my surfaces with

textures and transparencies and different already textured fabrics like velvet and satins.    I even embellish with old jewelry on occasion.   I am thankful that I get to use from all the different art areas to full fill my creative drive. I realized too that I have been using my experiences and interests to fuel my work for most of my life.   Doing a presentation like this is a good way to reflect and re evaluate oneself.

I now have the monster job of returning all the work back into the category packs that I store them in.     I feel so very thankful that I am working in so many ways to fulfill my creative ideas.

Progress Report: Acanthite :Foundation 24    This quilt is  went together very quickly for me.    This stone added some problems as some of the areas where a sold white.    I wanted to be sure to use velvet and now whale corduroy  on this work to show the wonderful textures they  add to the surface.  There were also lots of  cracks on the surface that added interest to this one.    -Acanthite-cl2

 Broadcasting    I am enjoying doing the hand work on this piece.  Most of the saxaphone Broadcasting full pads are stitched down now and I am adding  beads and french knots to the surface.   I have added some reflective quilting to the surface too.    This work is going along well at the Broadcasting detailmoment with each actions leading to the next.

 

 

YellowstoneYellowstone    The ease that Broadcasting  is a great contrast with my slow process on this work.  I think I finally have the map portions the correct size and location.   I will do the paint step for that and then I will move forward.  I also realized that the piece is too pale.  Yellowstone has lots of forest and I want to project that feel too so I pulled out dark green organza ( pinned to the left) and adding that will help me go forward I hope.

 

The Blues   This work The Blues just needs time as the hand work is a slow thing.   I am playing with three of different types of stitches-  the chain stitch,  the blanket stitch and the  fly stitch.  I am varying the size of the stitches  to add interest.

 

 

 

CarmelizedCaramelized    This is a new work that is still in the shifting and  pinning stage.    I melted  the Tyvec that I painted in the fall colors last week, with the iron between sheets of parchment paper.  The melt results are so much fun because they  are uncontrollable.     Mixing them with silk paper makes me think of carmel  and melting butter.  That is were the title came from.     I am enjoying the play.

June 27, 2013 More Summer Fun

DyeingHello everyone,

I am as busy as ever, but I have taken time to listen to the birds sing and enjoy the beauty of the summer season.   Yesterday I went off to visit with my friend Ethel and we used the beautiful weather to spend a day dyeing out side.  This shot shows one of the fabrics I  dye painted.  I can still feel the influence of the rocks and the water on what I am doing.  Along with dyeing is the batching step. This small shot is of some of the fabric under plastic so it will not dry out.   The last step is  the rinsing out- a project for later today.Batching   I worked on 10 pieces of fabric so that will take me a while I am sure.

Progress Report: Fossil Bed     This quilt is complete now.  I have enjoyed doing  all the stencil work here.  The last bit  of embellishment that I did,  was the addition of gold  foil shells  and then the little round stamps that I created at our last play day in May. Fossel Bedcl1 Fossel BedCl3In this second closeup the circle stamps are shown in orange and blue along with a second foil section.  I also did quilting in gold thread.   Susan told me that she want to see more images of the finished surfaces  and so there is a third closeup of this quilt.Fossel Bed cl2This last closeup shows the brown stryophone stamped area with the quilting in gold  too.

Red NebulaRed Nebula   I think that I am done adding to this work.  I need to decide now how I want to finish it.  One of my works  is off being framed now.  I may want to do that to this work as well.  I will know better when the framed work comes back to me.

Green Nebula Green Nebula   I have only just started my hand work on this second felted work.
This piece has a hand dyed fabric backing.  I am enjoying that hand work as always and this time I am using some antique pale green sequins on the surface.Green Nebula cl1The sequins are from my great aunt’s sewing box.

Rock FaceRock Face
This is my newest top.  I got so inspired by my trip to Idaho and looking at all the rocks, that I just had to do a work on that subject.  I got to use my newly developing skill with slender curved inserts too.  I think this is just the start of a new series.
