Moving into Fall

Hello,

Fall is really filling our air. The nights are crisp and cool and the days have been sunny and warm with a little rain every now and then.   I have been busy raking leaves and finishing up with the garden cleanups.

Last Friday Liz ,Victoria and I went to Rochester to the Memorial Art Gallery to look at the art.  We all were epically interested in seeing the “Infinity  Room” .   It is a room of mirrors and reflective balls.

All of it a bit over whelm inly beautiful!   The rest of the art was good too and we had a good day.

My Joyous Embroidery Class is now over, But I still have projects to finish.  I will post them in progress report.

The Pixies also meant and  We got to talking about Halloween and costumes.  I will post about that next week.

FAD had a meeting yesterday as well.   Sharon shared a  beautiful new piece with wonderful depth. .

Progress Report: Nine Play     This work is 43″ X 43″.    I still need to add the labels  on the back, but I am posting it as complete anyway.  It does seem to have nice movement.

Nine Two    This work is the sister to Nine Play.   I just started quilting it this morning so I am not very far along.    It is stable as I did stitch in the ditch on the edges of the nine blocks that are the start of this work.

Lap # 18   I just enjoy playing with the process some times and that is what this project is all about.  I am playing with the colors a bit too.

Lap ## 19   I have pulled the fabric I want to use in the next Lap quilt and that is about all I can say about this one.   Quite a contrast form the mono chromatic one I did this week!

Sea Floor      This is a rework project from my rock series about six years ago.  ( I will attach a before image)

I have been adding to this as a part of the Joyous Embroidery class assignment.    I really enjoyed the process and the new found freedom to embellish with lots of extra’s.   An antique belt bucket here for example.

Blue Sea  I have not put in much time on this work as I have been concentrating on other had work instead, but the trumpo is going well.

Light Florals   This work is also a result of my class with Flur Woods.  The Lace is mostly from my friend Judy.   There is still lots of work to do however.   It needs some colored embroidery work,   but I am pleased with how it is going.

I hope everyone has the type of Halloween that they enjoy.

Fall Abundance

Hello,

Fall is really starting to show up in this part of the world.  Color seems to be at every corner and the fruit is beautiful too.   I love the daily changes this season brings.

It has been a busy week for me.  On Friday, Liz and I went to the Member’s  Show at the Schweinfurth  and saw lots of great work from lots of fiends.

I really liked this little collage/ assemblage  by Victoria among many others.   It was a real visual feast.

Then I ran the Diva meeting on Tue with lots of new work there as well.   Ann is working away on her newest Yellowstone inspired piece and I am so impressed.   She is aiming for the feel of the heat and I think she is achieving that.

Therese, our newest member, shared lots of work.  But I loved this little owl piece the most.   She will be a great addition to the group.

Cheri and Terri both have work in the Rock Garden show that is up at the Art Center in Homer.   I like the irregular shape and high texture Cheri is playing with in this one.

QuEG’s meant as did the Slow Stitch group and they both were inspirational.

Progress Report: Blue Water   This work is complete now and is 39.5″ w X 35″ t.    The fish eyes are double buttoned and made with some of Aunt May’s buttons.

I used the metallic fabrics to give the fell of the scales of the fish.

Lap #4   This work is done except for the binding that I hope to finish this evening.  I also plan to send this work off to my aunt in Iowa next week.

Lap #5  This work is all pin based and ready for quilting now It will go into the nursing home stack.

A Little Action   I am now doing the hand work on this little piece.  I want to finish  it by Tue so I can mail it to the Schweinfurth at that time. It will be for the raffle.

Koi in the Kelp  All the kelp and the fish are attached  and now I am ready to add the eyes and sequins for added texture and color.

Frenzy    I have now cut away all the original background and pinned the fish to the new surface.  I did leave some ” bridges of fabric between some of the fish for stability.  I will cut the “bridges”( brown ) away as I reach them with the zig zag stitching.

Three Witches   I finished the left eye and added the bottom lip among other things this week.  She is beginning to feel solid I think.

Pillow    Because I can’t seem to throw anything away I stuff pillows with the cut away parts from other projects.  This pillow is one example.  The silk embroidery work is from my trip to China with my Mom in 1998.

Hope you are all enjoying fall and not working too hard.

English

Tree Hello,

I was looking at how the light shown off this tree against the gray sky and liked the sheen there.   That lead me to think of all the different words we have in the English Language  to talk about light.  Objects can have gloss, glint, sparkle, luster, shimmer, flicker  and glow.    Light as a concept expands our language to make it more colorful  too.   We can see the light.  Things can dawn on one or we can have a flash of inspiration.  There are bright  folks as well as dim wits.     One can have a brilliant idea.  There are  many more examples of words related to light that are a part of our language that we use  to describe a lustrous  world and I am enjoying that.

Jill  I went to an opening at Onondaga Community College yesterday were Jill Doscher  talked about her fiber work.   IMG_7301She talked of her process and how she grew from a printer to a fiber artist who dyes her own fabric and prints on it too. It was great.

I also checked out the Scholastic Art show that is also on display there.IMG_7302 The teachers are doing a fine job with their students.

Little trickelProgress Report: Small Spill This work is 12” X 12”.   It is my usual construction but I did not use any wool roving on this work.  IMG_7322  I did use parts of a silk scarf I hand dye painted about fifteen years ago when Barbara anduse to get together and play with art ideas one a week .   IMG_7324  There are also some yarns that were free motion stitched down to add texture.

Blue Too Blue Too  This stretched work is also 12” X 12”.   I played with taffeta, metallic fabric  and  organza on this one.IMG_7318  I also stitched down purple candy wrappers because the color was what I wanted.   The candy was from the bed and breakfast were I  stayed with Marty and Rosalie last summer.  IMG_7319  It’s a fun way to add a personal memory to this work.

Three Jacks Three Jacks    This work is ready for the frame now.   Judy gave a big frame and glass that I will try to add this work to.    I enjoyed doing all the machine embellishing on the Jacks this week.IMG_7328  Lots of wide satin stitching.

Color Challenge IVColor Challenge VI   This work is  15.5” x19”.     I am enjoying the exploration this challenge is giving me.

IMG_7340This is the last  piece in this series were I will have three of the light colored circles on its surface.   But change is suppose to be a part of the process.

IMG_7342

Collage VColor Challenge V   I only need to tack the last two facing ( brown at the top and bottom ) and add the sleeve to this work to complete it.

Color Challenge VIIMG_7334  I am  doing the quilting on this one before I add the bead work.  I am not sure how this will effect that aspect.     This is suppose to be a challenge and a place to explore……

FeltFelt Studies  I did three more studies in felting this week.  The pink uses organza ribbons as well as the wool roving.   The orange used silk and organza scarves and roving,  plus a bit of candy foil.   The green got it sheen from Angelina  and  a bit of taffeta.  These ideas are all from the book Stitch, Fabric, Metal and  Mixed Media.

New collageNew Collage work   I needed to do a bit of piecing this week so I went  back to the collage based working idea and found an old collage( from Sept)  to build a work around.  The orange marbleized sections are Ethel’s work.  The yellow and pale blue are mine altered fabrics.

New work

New Work    I started another stacked fabric work this week.  I enjoy the process so much I can not seem to stop doing it.  Building the surface it time consuming and so transformative.

Ice Dying  IMG_7312  I did yellow ice  dyeing this week .  I like the softer colors here.      There is also a bucket full of  the next batch that I need to wash out today. IMG_7333I used yellow and turquoise- and learned that the turquoise takes over.  I will try again after the next snowfall to see if I can mix these two colors and keep some yellow in the final fabric.

Value

IMG_7292Hello,

As the image shows I am still struggling with Value.     Thus far in my own study I would say that value works best in  strong contrast- or at least it is easier to see.  Gradation  limits the ability to see value, or perhaps that it is just more difficult to label.     I can see that I really do not know what I am exploring.   A good thing I think.

IMG_7253FAB meant this week.  Patti was/in really into knitting hats this month.  This  red one is for a newborn and will go to the hospital.IMG_7255This second one if for a friend who is going to Washington on Sat.

Nanacy's quiltNancy is still working away on the Blue Bird quilt for her Mom.  She had concerns about her boarders.   The  striped boarder will be followed by a cream one.    It is good to have folks to explore ideas with.

Five Jacks

Progress Report:   Five  Jacks    This work is 20” X 31”.   It is stretched on bars that my friend Tanya gave me.    The final work is pleasant and I enjoyed doing the piece a lot. IMG_7287   Applying the jacks this week was fun.  I added color to the body of the jack with water color pencils that I then heat set.     Because I knew I was going to stretch this work from the start, I also used paper as part of the material in the background.  IMG_7289  The dark brown jacks were all  created with a wide statin stitch.     Wools, velvets and  a rust dyed green silk scarf were also used in this piece.close up of 5 Jacks

Three Jacks  IMG_7259.jpg I finished the leaves on this work this week.   The jacks in this piece are made from brown velvet.

Circle Challenge IIICircle Challenge III   This work is 16” X 19.5”.   I only need to press and add the sleeve to this work and it will be complete. IMG_7282  I like the horizontal hand work on this one.     IMG_7281  The beads add interest too I think.

Circle Challenge IV  Circle Challenge IV  I am almost done with this piece too.  I am back to quilting in the circular patterns in the background.  I introduced a darker orange to the triangles as I needed a higher contrast.

Circle Challenge  V   Circle Challnege IV   I am changing things again with this work.  Because I do not have any more of the light fabric that I used for the faced little circles, I tried using the dark orange that I used for triangles in number IV.    I also dropped the triangles all together here.   I am still machine appliqueing down the circles.  The may move about yet.

Circle Challenge VICircle Challenge IV    The same can be said for this  layout.   The tilt is the biggest change.  Again most of the circles are free floating at this point.

Bird Block  IMG_7266   This is just a start for my entry for the SAQA auction.   Not at all sure were I am going with this one.

New work 1 new work blueI pinned up this new blue work  and have just started doing the free motion work.    I am sure it will change with time.

IMG_7262New work 2   This piece like the other is small and in an early stage.   I do enjoy this part of the process a lot.  Its so fluid.

Red StudyRed study I got a book for Christmas called Stitch, fiber Metal &Mixed Media  by Alysn Midgelow-Marsden.    This is one of her exercises using mostly felting on red velvet.    I am so rusty with the falter I broke three needles and did not have any replacements so I had to stop and order some new ones.   I do like who it is going however.

New Beginnings

IMG_7166Hello,

In the deep cold we are experiencing now, I think of the wonderful warmth of spring and the new beginnings that  a new year makes on consider.  New sketchbooks, new book keeping,  and new calender’s are  all part of the new start for 2017.    I am working on choosing a new word for my focus this year too, but  have not decided quite yet.  Sue Ellen at the QuIG’s  meeting was thinking of spring too with this new Hosta leaf pillow she shared.  The machine work is wonderful.     The Diva’s also meant this week.  Because of the show that Donna is hosting for us there IMG_7190was lots of talk and work for that event.       I served as transport for work for Noel and Regina's workSharon  as both  could not attend.   Sharon kindly gave me a little gift in the form of one of the book marks that she makes for her booth.    I like it. Regina has been doing a lot of indigo dyeing. ( look at that pile)      Cheri's workCheri had two new pieces for the show as well as to share.    She also does such nice little surprises for the backs of her quilts that I am sharing one of those too.IMG_7173

Ruth's waveRuth got into a traveling trunk show for SAQA and  she showed us the new wave she did just for that.   I like the waves out to sea too.   Then there is the wonderful foam under the wave.   It is really a strong work I think.  IMG_7169

LLieseLliese   had a wonderful piece to share with us as well.    This piece is much bigger than she usually works.

I hung my Solo Show yesterday with the help of Steve and Lynne.IMG_7177  Preparing for this was a good experience for me as I got to really look at the body of work.    I have been on this earthy foundations work for about three years now.  We hung 21 pieces and I took 24 home with me that we did not use.  I like having a choice. My work    It is a beautiful place to display and I enjoyed doing that step too because of the wonderful help.

Circle Challenge 2Progress Report:  Circle Challenge 1    I am pleased with how this turned out.   All the parts seem to work together for me.

Circle Challenge 2 IMG_7188  This second challenge has different colors in some of the strips and the rotation is different.  Three additional colored circles remain but the parts of the solid yellow circle have been dropped and replaced with four triangles.  I am ready to do the bead work now .

Name GameName Game Wendy and Mark  I am all done assembling the strips of this work now.   I made the back the other day IMG_7186 and I am now ready to add the batting and begin quilting it.

Three Jacks  Three JacksI have finished the background of this work.  Then I did some research followed by some drawing.IMG_7185  The paper patterns are enlargements of the sketch.  I still have one more to do as you can easily see.   I could not find the color fabric in my stash that I wanted to use so I had to purchase the green on Tues at Quilters Corner when I was there.

Bird BlockBird Block   I am playing with some leftover bird cuts from the Bird land quit here.   It is always  a little challenge to see if the remainders can become something on there own.    I am thinking now that I will balance the birds with some free motion  bushes based on this sketch book drawing.IMG_7184 They have such a light feeling that I feel they can balance the heavy birds on the left.

Label Block  # 101  Block #101I am working away on these little blocks.  Only 19 more to build now.

Deep in Fall

Hello-Ginko-Tree.jpg

I am finding the fall color all around me now.   And there is a lot on the ground.  I raked big piles to the street yesterday.  The leaf piles are deep .     This week was the beginning  of the month and so I had meetings with both QuEGs and Divas on Tuesday.   IMG_6759Sally started us off with a warm and fuzzy baby quilt for her grand child.    Linda  showed

IMG_6766.jpgus the project she had completed from her class at QBL this summer.    Liz was just home from Nancy Crow’s  Barn and she had some great work to share too.  She is mixing her drawing skills with her fabric work.

IMG_6767Sue Ellen is playing with line.   It was a good meeting.  The I went off to the Diva meeting in the evening.  There again folks have been busy with projects and events. Regin's work

Regina is doing great free motion machine  drawing.  I like her use of layers of fabric for this too.  Anne and Ruth both took a Shobori class at the Schweinfurth  and the results are wonderful.IMG_6787  I look forward to seeing these wonderful fabrics in new works.

MaureenMaureen showed her finished Shobori quilt.  She will be teaching these techniques in the spring.

Maureen also shared some antique quilt blocks she picked up on her trip to Maine.    I really like the wonderful stitches.IMG_6783

Alice's workAlice showed us the progress she is making on “The Bed” quilt.  She had such a strong style!

IMG_6776Lliesa  has finished her  village piece.  “The Tracks Divide Us” the title.

IMG_6801.jpgProgress Report: Bird Land   This quilt is 50” lone and 49” wide.  I started this quilt in Class with Rosalie Dace and the assignment  was to choose a shape and repeat it against a  patterned background.  I also added to the challenge by using the negative space too. IMG_6803  I did reflective quilting on this surface to fill it in. IMG_6807

Fall Fires IMG_6795.jpg  This stretch work is 30” X 22”.      This work is my second attempt to use my collage build up technique and try to pull away from the  “rock” imagery that is where I usually go.   IMG_6796  I enjoyed mixing the wool, organza and silks to build up this work.IMG_6798

New work  1, 2, 3    #2When I finish a work I usually get going on  a new piece.  I have drawn out three new layouts for work that use the collage build up technique.     This one  had the felt base built in.IMG_6788 With this one I a building up with bits and scraps of fabric fist.    There is a third but it  is  just lines on the black wool.

Self Challenge self challenge   I stated this self challenge this week too.  I want to do seven little works that are all the same size using a strip section and a circle cut from that strip unit.   I did not know how to cut away the circle and maintain the strip unit so I could rotate the circle and re insert it.  But the folks at the Diva meeting gave me two possible ways to do that.  I think I am ready to go forward now.

IMG_6813.jpgLabel Blocks # 90 & 91   I continue to do the work.  I am going to hunt up a stitch book this week to make some more exciting stitches though.

Summer has begun

Fox GloveHello-

I spent Monday, Summer Solstice, at Susan’s.  The wonderful Fox Glove is from her garden.  We were experimenting with adding  color to fabric.  Susan being more systematic  did a lot of different studies.  IMG_5897  I did rubbings with chalk and paint.  This example is of one of my  early works.   Susan’s daughter Rebecca worked up stairs and completed a quilt top.IMG_5900.jpg  Then she tried another color combo of the same block and this little work is a corner example of that. I like how the high contrast creates a glow effect here.  It was a good day and I enjoyed myself.

Dappled SunshineProgress Report: Dappled Sunshine  This three challenge quilt is done now.  It is 58” l X 45” w.   I have not worked this big in a long time.  There is pebble quilting in the orange areas and strait quilting in the tan and brown areas.   IMG_5911I used some very old altered  fabric like the cream with lines of paint at the top of this photo.  The area under the brown strip is ice dyed from this spring.   There is also some canvas in thisIMG_5912  and a print I did in paint using a doily as the resist.

Deep Jellies- close upDeep Jellies    I have started doing hand quilting in the areas of solid  blue in this quilt.    I like the contrast.   It will be a slow project too as there is lots of blue.

No Clue

No Clue    I keep trying this work with different orientations every time I work on it.  The machine quilting is going forward and I have quilted about half of the pink areas at this point.IMG_5919

Blue Iris  Blue IrisI have now completed the top assembly of this work.   Ethel had collected all the fabric in one bag.  I have put together  all  the squares and done the lay out.     Now on to the quilting step.  Great fun.

IMG_5908.jpgGenerational Whispers    I continue to work away on this project.  I re drew Alexis’s head because it was too small.  I decided I did not like my drawing of Gwen so I re did her too.  I took this work with me on Monday and got some help from Susan about how to move forward on this challenge.

wool workWool work The base is mostly down on this work.  I will start to add in fabric and yarn this week.

New work  IMG_5906This work got buried under the other stuff this week and did not get any attention.  That sort of thing happens when one has so many projects going on at the same time.

Mistake- Lesson Learned

064  Hello,

I have had a mixed week.  I spent Friday morning last week helping my friend Nancy and her Grand Daughter Jaelyn  do a little stencil work.  They were making a back pack and Jaelyn wanted her name on the flap.  We had a pleaset time stenciling  and as soon as she was finished, Jaelyn  pulled out the feather weigh and was ready to get back to assembly.

The  upsetting thing this Bears-001.jpgweek was a gift project.   I was making a baby quilt for a friends grandchild and I was nearly done.  I only had to add the strings for the balloons that the bears were holding and I would be complete.  I thought I really wanted to the strings to be strait so I pulled out a marker and drew the lines on to follow.  I was excited as I could see the end of the surface work for this project.081  I did not take time to test the marker and that was my down fall.   When it came time to wash out the marks I found that I had picked up the wrong tool and the marks will not come out.    I have tried several of the ways various folks have suggested from the inner078 net, but no success.    The quilt is ruined as a gift of course.   The pens do look similar, but that is an excuse.  I can go and purchase a gift, but some how that will not be the same.  I have no one to blame but myself for my haste.  I am disappointed with myself.  I am certain I will not make that mistake again.

Name Game III Patti Progress Report: Name Game III- Patti     This quilt is 14” X 26” .   I am so enjoying this processPatti- close up 1 as it really challenges my design skills when it comes to putting the blocks together.  One change in direction can 093change the whole movement of the work.      I like all the texture of the raw edges too as they seem to add a different type of movement to the final work.     There is also the challenge of using letters as a starting point because the shapes of letters involve strait lines and curves in ways I do not think ofPatti before cut drawing usually. This shot is of the work before I cut it into pieces.    I am dreaming of a new challenge using more then one name.  This could add to the spice of the project.

Vernal Equinox  Vernal Equinox This work is  22” X 25”.    I call this building process fabric collage.  I used lots of fabric textures in this work. 097 There are velvets, valures, satins, cottons, corduroys, and brocades here.  The 098wading and folding adds its own texture to the end product too.  I was trying to fill the surface with visual interest and I feel it was successful.

Running Red085I am to the quilting stage of this project so I am only showing a detail this week.  I used the  pattern on the red silk as my inspiration for that quilting pattern.  As it is turning out the double knit on the  old table cloth( on the left here) has some woven patterns in it that are similar to the swirls of the silk pattern.

077Make Visible is the title I have chosen for this new work.    I spent and afternoon with Susan last summer trying out all her mark making 076tools and  in doing that I wrote lots of different quotes.   I had pulled out a bunch of fabric last week and this piece seemed to go with one of the collections.  This shot shows how I star the assembly of this type of quilt.   I lay out were I want the big blocks and then I begin to fill in the spaces around them to create the top  using 2.5 ” and 1″ strips.

075.jpgFlag- Spring Grass   I got a call from Susan this week.  She too is struggling with this flag challenge that we created.  We agreed that for both of us, starting with the central image or center of interest  first- is not the way either of us works.   I am not comfortable filling in around the graphics we are both working with.  But I will persist as that is how growth takes place.  I only finished this one this week.  I am still struggling with the text as a part of this challenge too.

Label Block083  The beat goes on with this project.

Spring

Tree againt skyHello,

The trees are still bare, but the sun is shinning and I have spotted several Robins while I have been out of doors, and   I even ate my lunch out side today.   This shot not only shows the tree but is also shows an aspect of line.  A line can change its thickness as well as it’s direction.   The more I pay attention to lines the more I am aware of how vestal they are.   Lines can be used to express a wide array of emotions.    They can be sad, nervous , silly angry, graceful, calm, excited  and dancing to name a few.   Our culture  uses them  to communicate with words and images.      They are every were when one starts to look for them.

I made Easter Cards Easter cArdsone day this week.  I took a heavy card stock and on top of that I placed ribbons, yarn and plastic twist.  I kept the pallet limited to light spring like colors and  then stitched in many directions across the surface to attached the materials.  When I felt that the surface was  strong enough I cut out the egg shapes.  I added pipe cleaner ears and a pome-pome tail  to create little rabbits.  Then I glued them down to the cards were I had drawn some grass with a green marker.  I did leave some of the eggs as just eggs    and   glued them into nests so I had two different cards.  I had a good time and I hope  my friends enjoyed my spring fling.IMG_3414.jpg

Progress Report: Whip Shock Hill II   I am still working away on this piece.  I like adding all the texture to the surface of the work.  It makes for nice soft color changes is some areas.  I am sure I will complete this piece this week.

Scrap Happy  6 &7   Scarp Happy 6 The only thing I needed to do to complete this quilt this week was add the binding.  That takes me about an hour.  This one has center blocks that are all in grays and black and whites, with a few center blocks that have browns in them.

Scarp Happy 7

I also completed  Scarp Happy # 7.   This one  has deep red center blocks and gray center blocks.  The scale of the prints is much smaller than # 6 so it is not nearly as busy.

Vernal EquanoxVerna Equinox This is the newest piece using the Fabric Collage technique.    I am trying to add lots of different fabric textures along with the wrinkle and wad stuff that I have been working on.  This piece has cotton, valure, taffeta, silk, double knit,  organza,  grow grain ribbon,   and wide whale corduroy  in it.  The fabrics alone are lots of textures.   I hope I can make it work. Patti

Name Game  III – Patti   This shot shows the first  cut  from the brown and gray fabric.   The top image is the negative in brown and the bottom image is the positive in brown.   I have been very careful in my documentation of this process this time and I will put up a tutorial of the process this next week.  Hopefully I will be finished with the work too.

IMG_3408.jpg

Ribbon Work      I stared this new piece trying to play with the same ribbon application technique that  was on a piece of  red fabric that  Susan gave me.   Susan's scrap The process is slow and I cannot seem to work  with the closeness the example has– but I do like the effect.    My ribbon is much  wider then the example.  I am still trying to stay true to my New Years resolution of not purchasing any thing new so I will continue to work with the ribbons I have here.

heart of gold

Flags:    Heart of Gold     I am continuing on the  Susan’s   Flag Challenge.  This week I tackled the purple stencils.  Susan did  the rib cage that is on this work.  I  added more color with various fabric markers. The heart is a small bit of gold fabric that was remaindered from some other project as it was just pinned to the wall.

DSC00693.jpg Flags:  Relaxed Energy    This is my purple stencil.  I selected this pose from Susan’s book because I was surprised that many of the exercises that the physical therapist gave me for my back are also Yoga poses.    I added a beautiful glittered nylon net that Susan had purchased in Mexico and given me as a part of this flag.    I was also thinking about negative space when I made the stencil and when I cut away some of the netting.

Label Blocks 1 &2    Blocks  I need to have a hand work project for my evenings.  So I stated doing these label blocks again.    I did my last label quilt in 1988.     Some of the labels I am using are left overs form those works.  But I will soon be using only current labels.  They are much harder to find now because many IMG_3411.jpglabels are printed on the fabric as apposed to added units.  If you have any you can send them my way.

Enjoy the days as they get longer and warmer.

Florida Holiday

the shoreHello,

I am home from a week in Gulfport Florida.  I really enjoyed the new sceanry .    There was so much to lookSplit pine at my eyes could hardly take it all in! From the shore with lots of bird forms to the sky and the plant life- I was a shooting fool when it came to taking pictures.    I just love how this split pine looks and I am  sure it will turn up in some work at some time. gorman  Then  there was all the art.   We went to a show of work by  Geoffrey Gorman.  He builds  wonderful found object sculptures of animals and birds that include wire and canvas that he has aged with rust.   His work was wonderful.

Susan took me to an opening at the Florida CraftArt IMG_2621Gallery, where both  Oiseau Sisters had pieces.  This shot shows Susan with her birds.  She and I played in the studio every day.    I did Gelli prints with Lora on Tuesday.  I used one as a base  when we went to drawing on Wed eve.    Susan and I designed and then startedmy stencils a flag project.    We each made six stencils and printed two of each.  These are my images. At the end of the week we traded one of each of our images for one of each of the other person’s works. IMG_2656 Now we will both work on the flags as we see fit and when we meet again at the June Diva meeting we will compare how each of us has altered all the images.   We designedOwl it to be an open exploration project- trying new materials and techniques.   It will be fun I think.

I worked away all week on this owl stitchery project.   It is nearly complete now.  I had intended to work on a piece that I brought form home, but I did not do a stitch on it.  The first day  Susan pulled out one of her bins  of fabric and I got inspired.  Something about some one else’s materials I suppose. Nancy and her project

Tuesday was a FAB meeting and after a month of not seeing folks we had a lot to talk about.  Nancy is making great progress on her bed quilt( this shot shows the center section folded up  as it is all the stripes. ) Now she will build  more images on top.

This project went together quickly just before I left.  I am still using the fabric collage technique thatClose up 1- Boiling point I used with the Foundations Series, but it not based on any stone this time.    I also did all the work on canvas this time and then stretched it around to the back of the stretcher bars before tacking.  This first close up is near the center of the work.    I used  red, rust, gray and dark green velvet in this work as well as satin and silk fabrics.    The more I play with the layering and folding of the various fabrics the close up 2 of Boiling pointmore I enjoy the process. This second shot is near the middle on the right.   Boiling Point cl 3 A little copper paint adds fun.

Raw edges here add another texture to the mix,

Name Game close upName Game 1- Carol     I cut  the work  into 6″ square and then reassembled it.  I am only going to show this close up this week  because the only step that remains for completion is the facings and I will complete them for next week.

Owl   I amIMG_2688.jpg showing the completed owl that I did in Florida as I am going to send it off to the framers this week and OWL close up 1shooting through glass is as strong as a strait shot.  I really enjoyed working on this.  I tried lots of varieations on the fly stitch on this work.    The vanes in the leaves are fly stitches all connected to one another. Owl close up 2  The tree bark is that same stitch on its side and interlocked with its neighbor.  The wing tip is shown here and it is made from a pair of textured panty hose.  The pin feathers on the chest are woven copper ribbon that has been tacked down with open fly stitches.   The claws are made from fake leather that was frapped.     The found Owl close up 3objects that started this whole work are the chroched  rings that are the whites of the eyes.  The orange is a bit of bias tape and the black is a sequin held in place with a french knot.  The beak is created from the same fake leather as the claws.

Memory Map- Canyon de Chelly Canyon de Chelly     I am still strugling with with were this project is going.   But I feel closer then before.  Adding Spider Women’s towers ( on the left) will help anchor the work I think.

Nail Casting cl 1Nail Castings

I am still fasinated  by the shapes of these plastic parts.  I enjoyed tacking them down with lots of different types of stitches.    the shapes just tickled me.
