Fall Leaves

Hello,

I so enjoy fall, not just the color- and this year it it wonderful, but one of the best things is the sound of walking through the fallen leaves. The crunch, the swish, the crackel, all those sounds and the earthy smell always seems to bring me warm feeling of golden days and slowing down. A heightened feel of awareness of the wonder of the world we live in. I love it.

These beautiful flowers are a gift from my friend Noel. They sure bring the colors and feel of the season into my dinning room.

This was meeting week for me. Tuesday QuEG’s meant at noon. Everyone had lots to share. This shot is of some electron microscope images that Linda thinks she may use as starting points for some work. All of these are various liquors.

Liz is just home from a two week trip to Ohio to Nancy Crow’s barn and a workshop in using Graffiti and Lettering. She had a pile of altered fabrics that she has created that will keep her busy working all winter on just this topic. This one is called “Art Boys”. It sounds like she had fun.

Barb continues to work on her crazy quilts. I really like the Victorian feel this one has. She will have some great family remembrances when she is done and what a great way to collect and display the little bits one seems to collect from family members- like pins and such.

Angela is busy dying again. I love how she uses her abilities to get such wonderful work. This work has several layers of dye on it. These scarves are for the hostesses who are doing a baby shower for her grandson later this fall. She is so wonderfully generous with her work.

Sally is back at her embroidery machine creating wonderful cards for Christmas and fun family gifts. This strawberry is her own design and a family gift. She always give the kids $ presented in a unique way. This year the cash is wrapped inside the layers of the toilet paper inside the berry. She also went so far as to machine embroider the family’s name on the first sheet of each roll. Too much!

Sue Ellen and Corrine are both doing finish up work. Something about fall I think, we want to tidy up a bit before the confinement of winter. Corrine had three wedge cut baby quilts that she was finishing.

Sue Ellen had three distinct, but traditional quilts she had finished and this wonderfully fun Sea Horse piece she created. Each panel in the horse body is a different print and they are all connected with metallic cord that has been zig zaged in place.

Then I went off to the Diva meeting. Cheri and several others of us had spent a few days felting last month. Using materials she produced at that time, Cheri has finished a felted vest for her grand daughter. She used one of her jelly roll slices to create a pin too- its on the right. What fun!

Marty went along with me to the meetings and she showed one of her wonderful Nebula quilts. Everyone is amazed, myself included, in all the bead work and her tiny button whole stitching. She told us she used over 400 beads on one of the nebula pieces. I enjoy how she uses hand dyed fabrics too. wonderful images.

Liesa is working on her Map quilt. All the trees and buildings are in place now. She says there will be more quilts like this one of different locations.

Anne had lots of work to show- four pieces I think. She is getting ready for the Ithaca Art Trail that happens this weekend and next. I like this little whimsical piece the most. So much freedom and action here.

Noel had a wonderful little work that again displayed her techinque. She makes all the blocks and then can try out several arrangements before she puts them together. I like this layout myself.

Susan is getting ready to fly south for the winter. She sold one of her unique little birds that she showed us at the last meeting. Because she wanted to commemorate that event she did these four little paintings of the birds saying good bye. They sure project the happy smiling feeling that Susan always brings to every situation.

Then there was a FAB meeting yesterday morning. Nancy is making great progress on her Flower Bed quilt. She uses big prints and strong colors so very well. This is about one fourth of the top. I can hardly wait to see the full effect.

Patti is doing beading. I love this wonderfully designed small bead- it is only about one fourth inch long( that is the grid of a cutting matt it is setting on) This is the first for a bracelet that will have at least eight unique beads similar to this one .

Progress Report: Chrysanthemum I am very happy with this work. I used lots of the wonderful silk that I had pruchased from Ginny – most of the reds and purples are her fabrics- and I used the fabrics I had printed on as well. I am still playing with the off square cutting and piecing with this work. It creates challenges when one is quilting and putting sections together, but I am enjoying the process.

I had a good time with the free motion quilting on this work as too. I started with the center most blossom and sort of followed the shapes and forms of the flower to unite the layers of the work. This photos shows how I extended the quilt lines out to finish the petals were need be too. I did total free designing of the flowers in various sizes to fill in all the spaces that remained. I enjoyed this project, but I will admit that I will back my silks with interfacing the next time I use them so I do not get quite so much uncontrolled movement of the seam lines.

Golden Weeds This quilt is having a second life- a sort of face lift. I thought it was done three years ago- and it was OK- but when I was considering work for the Man In the Moon show and I had pulled it out- I thought this just is a good background. Then it hung on the wall for a few weeks. While on a walk, I was taken by the beauty of the Tessel weeds along the road side and thought they were strong enough to stand on top of the old work. First I machine drew in the heads and stems of the plants in a variegated thread. Then I looked for a stronger unit to place on top of that work to make it appear as though some of the plants were even closer to the viewer. I found this copper colored woven ribbon in my stash and felt it would do the job. By adding folded satin ribbon for stems the job was complete. The work is a lot stronger now and I just added a second label to give info about the additions and name change on the back.

Alpine Lake I started playing with the idea of creating a landscape of a mountain setting with a lake. It is all created on top of buckram- so it will not wrinkle up on me – in what I am starting to think of as my college style of construction. I am not gluing anything down, but building from the sky forward with the image. I attach all the parts with machine drawing that adds texture and detail to the work. It is a process that I am enjoying.

New Work blue This is just a background- done this time on purpose- that I want to play on top of. I have some vague ideas about where I am going, but I am still in the sketching stage.

New Work- wavy cuts This top is the same as the one above it. No plan other than to see if I could use wavy cuts in this piece. This too is pure experiment.

I am having a good fall and enjoying walking in the leaves, keeping my eyes open for ideas and just soaking in the sun shine.

Making a bit of Order

Hello,

The last fling of summer is over and the kids are all back in school. I find that this time offers me a great time to reorganize as I prepare for the fall and up coming winter. I need to sort a bit as I put away the shorts and summer tees. It is also a good time for me to look critically at what I really use. Like that wonderful divided basket that I thought I would use to carry dinner things to the patio that I never even pulled out of the cupboard this summer. The back end of my station wagon is full of items like that- all perfect ally good, but not necessary to my life that I am now passing along. It is very easy to pile up too much stuff- so now I feel a bit lighter and look forward to doing a bit of wall painting next week.

I hung a solo show at Man in the Moon Gallery in Kings Ferry on Friday last week. There are about a dozen works in this show all featuring the golds, oranges and browns of fall. I had a good time preparing and hanging the show.

Tuesday this week was the first Tuesday of the month and so I had meetings. The QuEG’s had wonderful things to share.

Angela is creating a wonderful hand embroidered baby quilt for her first grand child. The theme is Australian birds and animals. The Kookaburra is one of them. She is doing a beautiful job .

Barb is creating family history works with bits of hand work from her relatives.

Linda is quilting away on a very colorful lap quilt to keep her knees comfortable this winter. I think these colors will keep summer memories worm too.

Liz kindly modeled my latest fabric flower necklace at the meeting. I thank her for that. I only have one more to complete.

She also has been taking a

watercolor class and did some wonderful work in that area as well.

Then in the evening, I went off to the Diva meeting. This time of year seems to make many quilters want to dye. Both Sally and Ruth put in time on that topic this month. They both show their individuality even in their dying colors and techniques. I love that. Sally is also putting together a small accordion book to send to Elsie who has moved away. Everyone is adding a small 4″ X 6″ page to the work. The wood cut is by Liese and the Fimo bird is by Donna. The book will be sent to her when it is complete. It is so very thoughtful of Sally to come up with this idea.

Liese is working on wonderful project using Valerie Goodwin’s book, Art Quilt Maps her jumping off point. This is her start of her work displaying her favorite place in the whole world. This is just an early stage she says and she has yet to add houses and churches and trees to the work. I find it fascinating and look forward to seeing how it grows and changes with her efforts.

Anne is working on several things. One is a block exchange that she is creating wonderful reverse applique leave blocks for. I like the fact that she has pieced the fabric for the appliqued units she is using to create her leaves. They will all be unique that way.

Susan made us all laugh with her big head parrot choris. She made the removable paper mache’ heads over little soft bodied little creatures that she had picked up at garage sales for about ten cents a piece. What fun.

Noel does wonderful work with silk and this is a close up of some of her style. She too dyes many of her fabrics to get the tones and shades she wants. They are just luscious and I can hardly keep my fingers off of them. She really is a master of curved piecing.

I feel so very fortunate to be a part of such strong artistic groups of women.

Progress Report: The Road Less Traveled I am still doing the hand and machine work on this piece. I am doing lots of fly stitch as well as chain and ladder stitches on this one.

Stone Church This work has not appeared in a while. I did not know what I wanted to do with it. Like Liesi it is based on a memory of a location. I was stuck so I looked again in Valerie Goodwin’s book and decided to push forward. I painted the church on the organza and and then I carefully placed dark fabrics behind the opening in the decaying structure. It is getting there but the concept is not quite in place yet. Some work just takes lots of time.

New Work This is a close up of the quilt using the orange kimono fabric I purchased a few weeks ago. I am almost ready to start quilting it. I thought I knew what I wanted to do and had picked out some wonderful Chinese Characters to use as my pattern – then I realized – this is Japanese material- not Chinese. I will keep thinking.

Daily News I am still working on finishing the blocks for this project. But I can see the end of the process now. I am still adding/ subtracting and altering the units daily and that is why there is so much size in the photos. I do not always stand at the same distance from one day to the next.

Back in Balance August 14, 2014

Hello,

I have been on the go a lot of late and this morning I was feeling a bit out of balance. There were lots of tasks I need to do, but I decided to treat myself to a walk. When I go I do not take my phone or any electric devices to distract me. I use the time to pay attentions to the physical world I live in. I noted the sunshine, the many bird songs, and found the visual surprise of that the Popular tree is already shedding golden leaves. As I walked along the street I noticed that the fallen maple seeds looked like the birds in flight. I felt thankful that my legs were still able to carry me along at the pace that I wanted and returned home with a hand full of weed pods to draw later and a positive feeling of confidence about taking on all the little tasks that I needed to do. I also realized how much I need that bit of physical exercise for balance in my life.

The Diva’s had a play day last week and there was a lot going on. Cheri was marbleizing in one section of the room. I was do that as well although I was using a different method.

My work was pale because I was using ink on water and Cheri was using paint on a gel base.

There was lots of laughter, talk and sharing of ideas. Sally, Ruth and Susan did consolations as well. Everyone got a lot done and we all went happy home having made progress at our various projects. Unstructured days of work with fellow artists is a wonderful thing.

There was also a FAB meeting this week. Again lots of sharing and words of encouragement. Victoria shared the top she started in Rosalie’s class with us. The colors are based on a photo close up of a tulip. One of our challenges was to work with a color that we did not normally use. She chose the bright pink.

Progress Report: Ju Ju June I am to the quilting stage on this work. The free motion step is fun and enjoyable for me. I will finish the quilting and do the binding this week and then post the final next time.

Rafter Room Project This project too is left over from before QBL. It is to be a cover over the door to the rafter room from the bed room. I think it will stop the draft that I feel in the winter. Again I am to the fun part of drawing in the images in free motion. I like that fact that I not only get to complete the figures that I cut up from the mud cloth, but I also get create some new ones to fill the spaces between the printed fabric. This example shows the outlining and the filling in of those drawings on the surface. I am about two thirds done at this time.

The Road Less Traveled I have now completed the assembly of my top from Rosalie’s color class. The color that I seldom use is the green brown color in this quilt. It is a good challenge I think and it did make me streach- one of my personal goals for this class. I am almost ready to start adding hand work and machine drawing on the surface of this piece.

Daily News

This project continue to move forward. I ran out of velco for the connections so I am at a bit of a stand still. I have ordered more and now I just wait for it’s arrival.

Continuing QBL Effects August 7, 2014

Summer is marching forward at an alarming pace. I am still feeling the effects of Quilting by the Lake as my buddies share their work from the classes they took.

This shot is of Linda’s project from Rosalie Dace’s class using Kandinski as inspiration. Liz was in that class too. They sure both have different works from the same workshop. Liz also did a hand works class . I really like her pieces from that as well. they were not the only ones who took classes.

Linda and Sally were both in Valerie Goodwins class the first week. One of the projects form that class was to make a sampler of the types of effects on could add to the surface to alter the look. This is Sally solution. They are both working on bigger works using some of these techniques now. Sue Ellen took a painting class where they learned how to create different effects with paint on fabric. These arr just a few of her many examples. They were wonderful.

Barbara is taking a class on line and she is learning how to cut through many layers of cloth to create a different type of effect. This work is in progress. She created the color change in the center section with extensive thread work and a little paint.

Lynn has finished a long time needlepoint piece. She says it has been so long in the making that she is not sure when she started- but it has been at least 10 years.

Corrine got a new stump doll for her home in Arizona.

Susan told us about her teaching and showed us her sampler of garlic paintings in this accordion book that she uses for presentation.

Liesa has been having lots of company this summer. She still managed to produce this great work about her concern for the melting ice poles.

She feels it is not menacing enough to produce the effect she is looking for.

I spent two days with Susan playing in her studio this week. One day was with her friend Linda. They played with Gelli plates. I worked on college and did cards. I was down to only two in my box. The second day I was with Susan, I experimented with writing tools on fabric and wrote quotations and drew pictures.

Progress report: Rafter Room This work is now ready to quilt. I have been making big pieced backs for years. At QBL , when Rosalie Dace was giving instructions about way to finish quilts she said,” Make the back interesting and relate it to the front with leftover pieces or similar colors. ” This is my back for the Rafter Room piece. It is nice to hear one’s ideas confirmed every once in a while.

Daily News Daily News is still a work in progress. I have about sixty of the units that still need backings. It takes about half and hour to add the velco to a square, stitch that to the finished front square, trim and then flip the unit right side out- then to finally stitch it closed to complete the process.

I took Daily News in its present state to the meetings I had this week and told the gals my story about the process. I then let them add the blocks for that day. It was fun and I got a lot of good feedback from that action.

The last image with the two squares on point were added by Liz when I showed the work at QuEGs. The velcor works on an angle and that adds a whole new way to go with the process. Friends sure can add to the wonder of each experience we have.

As we head for the 4 of July celebrations I have been thinking about seeing. I read “We don’t see what we see. We see what we want to see.” by ALan Fletcher. My first response to this was surprize. But as I though about it I agreed. I then though- Oh this is not so true of artists- we pay more attention to what we see. Then to test myself I tried to visualize my walking shoes that I wear almost daily and recall how many holes were there for laces. Five I though with confince…. but when I checked there are six, although I only have my laces in five of the holes. So I drew them as my drawing exercise this morning. This will help me really “see” them I though. And that is true, I really did see them, but in the looking at the shoes I shut out all the things around the shoes. I would be quickly overwhelmed by the visuals if I did not do that editing and selecting of things in my world. In the end I have to agree with Mr Fletcher- we all are confinded by our choices of “what we want to see”.

This week was the first Tuesday of the month of July so I went to meetings. QuEGS meant and we all had lots to share. Liz is making progress on her memory quilt for her friend. All the blocks are made now and she will begin the final assembly soon.

Linda C. showed us her crazy quilt and amazed us by flipping up the work to show the paper and that showed the planning pages she had under the sewn squares. Several of us admitted we would not have planned out as much as she did, but would have let the process tell us what to do next. We all have different procedures we follow as we work. This work will be a stunner when it is complete. The good thing about seeing the processes of others does help us all of us to think more carefully about our own work and consider if we can improve by following the the examples around us.

Angela is still being influnced by her tip to Hawaii. She showed us several beautiful silk painted flower pictures this week.

Then I was off to my DIVA meeting. Cheri shared her “Miss Liberty” wall piece and her new lady lizard( in the for ground) She mixes fabric and yarn in her sculptures and I think that is a great idea.

Alice had her fabric books to show us. They are so delightful. I enjoy how she mixes commercial fabric images- the water lily- with her own hand painted materials- the turtle.

Ruth assembeled all the units she had created in the class she took last month. They do make a pleasing little collection I think. And what a great visual review of techniques to have on the studio wall so one does not forget about them.

Progress Report: New Iris I am happy to say this work is now complete. I took it to both meetings on Tue and asked for ideas on the beards for the iris. I had thought that purple was the color to use, but the others felt yellow or white would be better.

I tried both colors before I settled on the yellow. The yellow sure does pop forward on the purple flowers and draw the eye. That is what contrasting colors are suppose to do, but I do not think of it most of the time while I am working.

I like the depth this quilt has – all the applique on top of what I once thought was a completed work, helps that idea. I will try to keep this more in mind in the furture too.

East Window This work is done now . I made this quilt to put over the window in the east bedroom in the winter. I used a special batting that has a foil liner in the center to reflect heat into the room and cold out. There is not a lot of quilting on this work. I only stitched in the seam lines( in the ditch) to connect the top and back. I would have done a lot more machine drawing on the surface if it was not for window use.

Baby Quilt This one got completed this week as well. I was surprised when I finished putting the last hem stitches in last even and realized I had finished off three this week. The bad news is I have no new beginnings.

I try to be practical with baby quilts and make them so they can be easily washed. I also add a sleeve so they can hang on the wall if the parents choose. This is the second child for this family so there are two bears, one for each child. The bigger one is helping the smaller bear and that is my way of saying that they should care for one another and the older one is a part of the process.

I like the simple outline applique technique that is easy to use with this style of quilting. It goes quickly when the layout of the parts is done. One only needs to think about the layers of the pieces so there are as few starts and stops as possible. Here I did the mane first, then the ear, then the body, and last I added the reins and the eye details.

Daily News I can now see that it will take a lot of time to finish this piece. It takes a seven min. to machine add the velcro spot, and stitch around the two units , leaving an opening. When I set down to do the hand work I trim the corners and turn the block right side out, before stitching it closed. I get between four and five of them done in an hour. I know I am working as fast as I feel comfortable with– but the process of finishing up seems a long way off at this point.

Enjoying the Spring June 5, 2014

Hello,

I have been enjoying being out of doors and doing lots of yard work this week. Being gone always means lots of catch up for me and that seems to be how I have spent most of my time. That and meeting with my friends that is. The first Tuesday of the month was this week so I had the usual QuEG’s and Diva meetings plus the FAB group has moved to the first of the mouth too. It is good to see all my friends and it is very stimulating.

Barb started off the QuEGs meeting with her three “sliced block” tops. She sure seemed to be having fun with them. Then we moved on to Linda who is taking an on- line class where she is doing prep work for a quilt about her Irish Grandfather. The notebook is a work of art all by it’s self I think. She is collecting lots of ideas to work from for the project.

Then we looked at Liz’s strip blocks. It is a memory quilt using her friends father’s shirts. The outside strips of each block are from the shirts. The florial prints in the centers represent the friend.

Then we looked at Sue Ellen’s work. This new fish quilt of hers really is a joyful one I think. This photo does not show it- but the green has a wonderful reflective quality that really adds to the feel of water in this piece.

Next we looked at Sally’s wonderful work. She has finally finished piecing her “One Block Wonder” top. I love how she used the fabric in such a way that the quilt goes from light to dark in a diagonal sweep across the top. She continues to work hard on her Machine Embrodery too. All the lemons are drawn in thread as is the green sprig and the pie crust. Her work always blows me away.

After the meeting I drove south and picked up Susan who is now back in Central New York and we rove to the Diva meeting together. Where I got my second jolt of creative stimulation. Sharon who is going to graduate school had lots to share. Photos, prints and quilts as she prepares for the many art shows she partisipates in during the summer. She is one busy gal.

Donna is taking a class in Spirit Cards and this a shot of one of them. I am sorry that there is so much glaire here. I like too how all the groups I belong to are so accepting of a wide varitey of different materials as well as styles.

Anne peresented this finished piece at the meeting too. I think the machine work really adds a lot of secondary interest to the surface. I admire how she uses her fabrics.

Susan spent six weeks in Mexico and she built this day journal of that event. She challenged herself to try lots of different techniques on six inch pellon squares with each square representing an event for each day of the trip. I think it is a wonderful way to stay on track and to be creative at the same time. This close up shows foil she found in Mexico behind the painted and cut out pellon sheet.

The FAB group meant this week as well. I taught them how to make silk paper. This shot shows Victoria working at that. Nancy made clouds with the silk roving that she intends to use on her new bed room quilt as a part of the sky.

Victoria and I are in a color class later this summer. She is preparing for that by doing a bit of progressive dying for that project. I think this color run is great. It will be fun to use them in class later.

Patti is the owner of a new pin loom and she has been weaving away. She loaded it up and started a new project during our meeting. I can hardly wait to see the finished piece.

I like all the color that she is using here. With all the visiting going on, I did not do much work on my own stuff. I am OK with that one needs to fill the well every now and then.

Report: Three Trees and a Singer The title of this quilt has changed from just Three Trees to the new one because I added a black bird. It is very small in this image, but it is there on the far left tree about half way up. I added the bird last because I thought the work needed a little reason to look with a bit more care.

The bird is in this closeup. The trees are all based on pictures I took in the winter of trees in my backyard. The trees are all full of leaves now I am glad to say. The photo to the left here shows all three techniques that I used to create the trees. The brown is a wool I started with and the black is yarn that I stitched down on top of the wool. Then after I had stitched together i sewed it to the background. Then I loaded the bobbin with thick tread and from the back I free motion drew the limbs onto the surface of the quilt. I enjoyed creating this quilt.

Daily News ( Formerly Daily’s) These are the last of my Daily’s. I say that because I feel I have learned what I needed to from this project. I am calling the work Daily News because I worked on the pieces every evening during the time the news was on TV. Now I have to figure how what to do with the pieces I have created. I have 240 four and half inch squares. They are not finished so this can’t be the end. I do not want them to simply end up in a box and I do not want to simply sew them together as I have enjoyed placing them next to one another in various arrangements. I am thinking of several possible solutions and I will spent this week making my final decision about that during this time. That and planning the next possible mini challenge.

I hope the week ahead is full of good creative time for all.

National Choclate Chip Day May 8, 2014

Hello,

I hope everyone is enjoying a choclate chip cookie today. What a wonderfully silly thing to make a national day. Not sure of the origian of this idea, but I am sure the cooks approve. As do those of us who will eat a cookie for any reason.

This week contained the first Tuesday of the mouth so I had meetings. The QuEG’s meeting was great with lots of show and tell. Sue Ellen showed us this wonderful book/ album/portfolio of all of the fish quilts she has done this year. What a great way to present your work. Corrinie is not beading on this wall piece. I sure love the semenate. Linda and I showed the fabrics we had created in the soy dyeing class from last month.

Then it was off to the Diva meeting on Tuesday evening. Anne and Ruth had both taken a workshop with Gwen Marsdon. This first one is Anne’s take on the processes. I like how crisp and clean Anne’s work always is. She limits her color and uses it so very well- something that I could afford to learn a little be more of.

Ruth chose to try all the techniques and plans to assemble them into a sampler type thing when she is done. As is usually true in a class each person puts their own stamp on the final outcome. They both had a good time too.

Spring seems to bring a lot of workshops to all of us as Donna took one as well on Encostics. She came away with three wonderful images and I found it difficult choosing the one I liked best to show here.

Liese continues to wow us with her wonderful little dioramas. This one she finished up on Earth Day (April 22) and it is her statement about all the pollution in our Oceans. I really enjoy her little people- they are so very animated and full of life. She told us this work was the center piece for the dinner table on Earth day too.

This meeting marked my fifth anniversay with this very diverse group of gals. I so enjoy them and I drive home with my mind spinning with new ideas and inspirations every time.

Progress Report: Foundations XVII Obsidian This quilt has many different fabrics in it. I used some denim from my husbands pants in one area. There is velvet, silk, cotton, taffata and nylon fabric here too. I made my choices based on the colors that I saw in the rock ( there are lots of reflections due to the nature of the stone) – it did not matter what type of material it was. The process also involved some fibers that I purchased years ago without any knowledge of the content or type. I was delighted by the color then and I still am. I am glad to finally find a home for some of them. There is some aposistory fabrics in this too. the textured gray black show here was on the piano seat Mom covered when I was in Jr high. I m glad to find a home for it too.

Foundations XVIII – Rusty This quilt has lots of old fabric that was intended to become clothing. The rust colored wool was purchased for an a-line skirt. I am still struggling with the irregular shape and the high point at the top of this quilt is still a problem here. I though I had it sloved, but that proved not to be the case. I plan to add some stays in to that section today. I am not surprised as there are always new problems with unexplored territioy. This first close up shows some fabric that I rust dyed. I did break a needle when I tried to free motion through the three layers of the rust dyed fabric. I do not know why, but I fear that even though I did wash it when I finished the fabric there still could contain a bit of residue . Again I used lots of different fabrics on this piece. Wool, velvet, cotton and the back side of taffata can be seen here. I am enjoying the process.

Maya’s Tee Shirt Quilt I finished this quilt this week too. It took me four hours to do the hand stitching on the binding of this project. It is a queen sized quilt. The free motion work on the blocks was the most enjoyable part for me.

New Iris’s This top is now ready for the quilting step. It is a little too much like a very nice background at this point so I will need to think carefully about how to go forward on this project.

Foundations XIX – This is the new pinned up section for the next work. I love the wonderful moss green fabric that Noel gave me a few weeks ago. This mossy stone is the outgrowth of that feeling. I feel the striped fabric that is the base for this one is still too strong so I will keep building on top of it.

Daily’s My storage box for these little exercises is almost too full so I think I will end this series soon. I want to move on to another idea as well.

Hello-

Spring is finally showing it’s self her in central New York. Three days in a row of blue sky and sun shine! Tue and I spotted this garden full of spring flowers and it made me smile every time I thought of it all day long. Hurry for the new season! This week has been so very full of stimulation I, hardly know were to start. At the FAB meeting Patti showed us two scarves she had knitted to send off to be given to runners at the end of the Boston Marathon this year. They both were so very soft that I am sure they will be welcome gifts. Victoria had been to a little workshop that Noel is giving. They are playing off the ideas of the necklaces that Mackenzie- Childs sells. The catalogue in the background was the inspiration, and Victoria really put her own spin on it I think. The when I went to the Diva meeting last evening I found that Noel was the gal who is leading this play. She is giving up her rented studio and cleaning as well as trying to create a new workshop for herself. Everyone in both groups loves the idea, myself included so she has agreed to open her space and try a variation with several more of us. I am looking forward to that play day.

The QuEG’s meeting was in morning on Tuesday and there was lots of inspiration there too. We got to meet in Sue Ellen’s studio, always an inspiration place all by its self. She ” wowed” us with six new works! Like all of us she has lots of fabric and these two pieces were created from her first dyeing experience over 15 years ago. She says she did them to try out different quilting patters on similar tops. I think she proved her point.

Then there is the wonderful on going work by Sally. She does such amazing stuff with her embrodery machine. The birds just blew me away all by them selves. Then all the unique nine patch blocks on top were just wonderful too. In addition to that she had a pack of about a dozen 6″ cards that used smaller images. Each card was different and where she used varigated gray black and white thread for this card, many of the cards used different threads for different sections. She pushed the idea further water color pencils to add more color to these small wonders. She gets sure gets miles of usage out of her machine.

Liz is playing with retro fabrics and antique blocks that are six inches on a side. The fabrics and patters sure play together well and are a delight to look at. The small size means it is not overwhelming- but it will sure take a lot of blocks to finish the piece.

Barb is working on this colorful work for her grandson. The dark blue is denim- just the wright thing for a young boy. She is just starting to quilt in the areas around the zig-zag lines- the white is chalk that will disappear when that job is done.

Then there was the Diva meeting on Tuesday evening to add further delight to the eye.

Anne is pushing forward trying unique quilting patters with the works she showed last month. I really like how the horizotal varigated thread seems to disappear in places on this work. Class projects are great places to play with new ideas and explore.

Alice had yet another new wall book to share with us. This one is called We Love the Water. The bid bird is one she hand painted on black fabric. The loon and flying Canada Goose are both from commercial fabrics. I find the way she mixes thous two ideas amazing. Most of the time putting these two things together just does not quite meet the mark- but she does it flawlessly.

Noel is working with thin strips now. All the brown units that are cut on the biases sure add to the challenge here. I like the limited values that she uses here.

She also had a second larger top in this same vain with kits in some of the diamond shapes.

Cheri finished the wonderful work she shared with two mouths ago. She has added a lot of hand work to her canvas painted quilt Fiddle Heads. I really like this work!

The last of the three Scarp Happy quilts was picked up on Friday. It went to the local Public Television Station for their spring auction. I also gave them a small wall quilt. I have done this for years as I so believe in public broadcasting.

It too makes me smile as I recall the joy of creating the stamped areas as well as all the free motion flower and leaf forms I put on the surface of this one.

I really feel the sewing machine has become a drawing tool for me. That has only come with years of doing the process, but I want to encourage everyone to keep doing it until it is a natural act for you too.

Smoke

This work was also completed this week. More than once I thought that I was done, and I would hang the work on the pin wall at the end of the day. Then when I would look at it with fresh eyes in the morning I would see easly what else was needed- more hand work for the most part. I had never quilted through silk before I tried this project and learned a lot doing so. I really like how the needle glides through the surface of the project.

I cut up an silk scarf that I had created years ago and was not what I would call a success. All the dark and gray areas are a part of that project. I like the result here.

Grove I am still working on the insertion process. I only have one more tree to add the branches to and then I will start the stumps and setting. I may shuffle the parts I have created too. But I make those visual decisions by looking at the subject.

New Work This is the top half of the work I was considering cutting apart last week. It was not working as it was so I cut it. The black tree is just pinned in place. I did try several other placements before I settled on this one. Again the visual decisions was made visually. I have quilted in the ditch the background sections of this work and plan to free motion in the tree with additional limbs as needed.

Daily‘s I am working away on the these little fellows. I discovered one of the black circle and units from last month in the bottom of the tin where I keep the prepared squares. So I finished it too.

Hello,

Well March did come in like a lion here, but the days are longer and Day Light Saving Time will begin here this week end, another sign of spring. This week was the first in the mouth so I had two of my group meetings on Tue. Quilt Exploration Group meant and we all had lots to share. Sally’s pocket bag says it for those of us who quilt- and we eve make our own scraps when necessary. She sure is exploiting her embroidery machine.

Barb added a note of warmth with this sun flower wall quilt. I really like her background quilting that uses the floral print on the back as a guide for creating the flower patterns.

Angela decided to take advantage of our snow pack to do some snow dyeing. The colors are so very vivid and rich. She also did an excellent job creating a family memory quilt for her sister in law using many old bits and doing several transfers onto silk from paper labels. Three generations of family memories are displayed here.

Corinne has been working with metal and she has created these five pieces of jewelry . The broken unit shown here is yet to be fired. Sue Ellen is doing free motion drawing to fight off the winter blues. She has created four small quilts using winter trees as her theme. She hand dyed the back grounds last summer. There is lots of creative action going on in this group of gals.

Then I went off to the Diva meeting . They too displayed lots of diverse creative activity. Sandi started us off with a small demonstration on the rug hooking process she is doing to create her little wool pile creations . She uses felted wool garments, yarns and roving in her process. They all work together to create wonderful patterns and images. Liese has finished her accordian book. There were no instructions for this one and she says it was quite a challenge. She is going back to soft sculpture for a while.

Cindy is getting ready for a solo show and she put on one for us first. She used black velvet on this work. The texture is wonderful. What an inspiration. I will consider using velvet in my work in the furture too. I love her strong graphic style. Her edges are so crisp and strait. I love her use of line too- it really leads the eye around and through her work.

piece on stretcher bars. I like the way the treads still escape off the edge as they do on the bigger pieces. I am really developing this collage like fabric style and enjoying the process. The new material in this creation is paper in for form of a torn up map of Canada. It was about the second layer I put down on the wool that served as my base for this project. Then I went on to use the usual materials that I have been adding- the fabrics, organza, silk papers, yarns

and ribbons. I did more hand work on this piece than I have been doing in the past too. I did that because I was working on the wool and I though it added to the staybality of the process a bit. I was worried about ding free motion on top of hand work,but that proved to be an unnessary thing. I was conderned about the text on the map as well, but again that proved to be an unnessary thing as it blended into the final work quite nicely I think.

Lighting I am very unhappy with how this top turned out. All the slicing and inserting of the green strips has caused a lot of warping of the surface. I need technical advice before I put any more time into this work. At the moment I am not sure it can be saved. One does not grow unless one takes chances and fails every now and again.

New Work I have pinned up the fabric for my next start. This will force me forward I think as I will be using silks and organza’s along with cottons.

Capture Scarves I have finished ten new neck scarves. I always enjoy creating these colorful additions. I really like how the color one chooses to wear under them can be a contrast or if the color is the same as the nylon netting the objects appear to float on the wearer. The effect can be very dramatic and always invites curiosity from viewers. It sure makes for fun conversations at times too.

Daily’s I keep my hand work up with the Daily’s. The collection is getting large now, but I still find it fun.

Hello,

It is a snowed like crazy yesterday and I just could not stay in doors. I had a good time waking in the deep snow. The going was slow as there was about 10 inches of new snow on the ground and it was falling very thick and fast. I walked a block from home and looked back- I could not see the house. I did enjoy the way the fire plug and several small pine trees seemed to be wearing pointed snow hats. I helped push a gal out of her driveway and the snow plow did pass by before I got home form my short walk. It is getting difficult to find joy in this long winter. But I console myself by remembering that this too will pass. The QuEGs group meant on Tuesday. There were only four of us but it was still a good time. Sally is doing some amazing stuff with her embroidery machine. She programed and stitched all of these bags herself. She said she wanted to test thread and needles. There was also a Diva meeting on Tuesday evening and again it was very stimulating. There is so much variety going on in the group it is hard to keep up. Cheri is exploring painting on canvas and really starting to make it her own thing now I think. She not only adds hand dyed fabric on top in a collage like process she is also doing lots of hand stitching on top too.

Lori is doing a wonderful job mixing machine work with hand embroidery on silk. This piece will be a real WOW when it is done. There are two folks exploring book making processes at the moment. Liese is working on a book with individual hand made fabric pages- she is not sure how it will go together at this point. Several pages are sun prints. One is marbaleized, and some are collaged. It is an engineering problem now. The other book worker is Alice. She is using an accordion book format for her works. One book is titled “We Love the Sky” and sun rise to moon rise are represented in her book as one continuing diorama . This image is of rain and storm followed by the rainbow. Her second work is titled ” We Love the Woods” and it too is in the diorama layout. I love how she mixes her painted parts with commercal fabrics and images. I find her trees really strong. Sandy is busy doing wonderful hooking projects. She has two works that are both landscapes that work as a set or stand alone. Her mix of sliced wool and yarn do wonderful things together is powerful. The work in small but this style works for her busy life at the moment. Anne went to a work shop in Vermont with Cynthia Corbin called Emerging Styles. She came home with a wonderful pile of great started projects. She discovered how important light is to her way of creating and that has pushed her into a new direction. I can hardly wait to see how this develops. Noel likes to use silk in her work and although this is an older piece it shows her wonderful handling of this some what difficult material. She does not fuse the silk to any thing either and that allows her to distort the material in the manner this shows. Ruth is still working away on her African symbols project. She is ready to begin quilting on this work now. I think it is very strong graphically. Needless to say I am all excited by all these wonderful works and ready to charge forward. I am so very fortuniate to belong to two powerful groups of creative folks.

Progress Report: Golden Path This quilt really seemed to come together without much in put by me. I had all the stripped sections left over from another project and they were in the bottom of a box. When I came across the red, gold, and blue fabric last week it just seemed to pull the other fabrics with it. The big gold and white chunks of fabric are from the printing day I did a few weeks ago. I looked at the surface of this quilt a long time before I started quilting it. I decided to emphasize the square shapes in the center using a Greek Key pattern. I started quilting in the center making first one key and then another connected to the first using variegated yellow thread. I then stared outside the second squared area and built a second set of units. I continued to build until I had about a dozen keys and by then I had worked for an hour on the project. So I stopped. Before I began work the next day I looked critically at the work. It needed a bit of punch so I added a row of gold thread in an outline pattern all the way around all the created units. Thus the name – Golden Path- as it just leads one around the center units. I then switched back to the yellow and repeated the same procedure as the day before. I then added as second out line of gold and retuned to the yellow keys to the out side of the quilt. I am pleased with the results.

Rounding Up Green I am quilting away on this quilt now. I am using the same idea as I applied to Golden Path only I am using spirals. I create one and then from it I spiral out and create a smaller one next to the first and keep building the pattern out from the center of the work. I will not add a row of gold thread however. It is working without that addition.

Maya’s Tee Shirt Quilt I continue to work away on Maya’s quilt. I now have three rows completed. It is getting bit difficult to handle on the pin wall. I still have two rows to construct and then it will be time to start a back.

Scarp Happy I have been working on putting together scraps for about a mouth now. I decided to give myself a break for that and build a top out of the work. I cut the pieces into long 2.5″ widths and then added those pieces to 4.5″ centers. There are blocks with an Egyptian print center and blocks with a red print center . I am now ready to start creating rows for the top of this quilt.

New work-purple and pink I think the cold and whiteness of the weather is effecting my leaning toward spring colors at the moment. This one is just starting to come together. I am going to try to work in the 18″ X 24 ” format again. This is my first return to that format.

I pulled out the fabric for this project yesterday during the storm in the morning. Again I think this is my attempt to think about spring instead of the cold all around me.

New work Foundations IX

This is a close up of the new work on the next Foundations piece. It too will be on a smaller format. All the green thread is unraveled silk thread from a woven section of fabric. The solid green and blue are silk papers.

Daily’s I do my Daily’s when I watch the news in the evening. I have been following that practice for a while now and my attitude about the news is much more mellow.
