Back to school

Hello-

It’s September and the kids are back in the classrooms across this country.   New pencils, rulers,  and notebooks  now find their way into many   households.  I even purchased a new box of crayons for my self- My nod to the beginning of school and the beginning of fall for many of us.

 

IMG_1810It was also the fist Tues of the month this week and I had my regular meetings.  At the QuEGs meeting Lynn shared her new stash of fabrics that she had purchased on her trip to Alaska.   Linda shared her piece from her QBL class with  Jane Sassman .  Wonderful colors here.   IMG_1814Dory shared her new wall quilt.   I like her applique work with the birds and berries.

Then I went off to Susan’s and enjoyed her work with the garden and banners.IMG_1815   She is doing fun stuff with transparency.   Together we went to the Diva meeting.   Lots of great work going on here too.  Maureen shared her banner of Shobori  for the Huston show.  It is two feet wide and 24 feet long so this shot is only a small portions of the piece.   Regina is working away on this piece of machine work by adding beads.  It is for the Rhapsody in Blue show.   What a challenge.    IMG_1828This is layer two of Lori’s newest Fireweed piece.    I know she is just started with her many layers of work.   IMG_1839I recalled that there was a fall call for 10”X 10” work so I finished up this piece.  When I finished up I could not find the source for my memory.  So I emailed the gal in charge only to learn that it is an alternating yearly event.  I am prepared for next year.  This one is done and IMG_1836here is a second start.      I always was one who liked to have the work done well in advance.

Progress Report:   Birch Trees  This quilt is a rework and it is 14”w X 18” l.    The landscape was all that was on this work before I reworked it.     I added the canopy and the birch trees this week .  It helps the work a lot I think.   I really IMG_1844 learned that I need to slow down and just let some work rest on the shelf for a while before I rush to finish.

  Daily Practice IV  This  piece is 18”w X 24”l.    It has taken a little over 7 weeks to complete.   IMG_1853 With this work I limited myself to only three stitches – two variation’s on the Fly Stitch and the Chain Stitch.   IMG_1851The brass add on’s are from my friend Carol and they are   from her grandfather’s collection.

Daily Practice V   This is the new base for my next work.   I plan to add a few more circles before I begin   the hand stitching on this project.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Forest Fire This is the next piece in my elements series.   I was tickled by the idea that I burnt the fabric edges of the front trees in my effort to get the edge I wanted.   I feel I am ready to begin a bigger Fire work now.

 

 

 

 

Collection 3- So True This work is 16” w X 20” l.      It is my adaptation  of the technique suggested in the August/September  issue of Quilting Arts by Libby Williamson, titled Sip then Stitch.   She suggested the use of tea bags mounted on felt  for bases for machine work.    I used pattern tissue instead.  I can not follow directions without changing them to suit myself.     I really liked her use of zippers  as” add on’s”   and I did apply that idea.  IMG_1857 I also liked the idea of stitching down all the little bits and part of things around the studio to make something bigger and more interesting.   Our lives are made of lots of little bits and pieces so the work sort of represents that as well.

 

Collection IV- Friends    I continue to look at all the little parts and things in my studio and built a base for more stitching.    The title comes from the fact that there are already three little elements that friends have given to me on this surface  at this point.   I look at the purple applique at the top and think immediately of my friend Tanya.   The same can be said for several other little elements.

JIG    This work in in the washer at the moment.  I want  it  to fray out the edges of the words  and I followed Sharon’s technique to do that.   It will be clean and pressed next week.    

IMG_1854Scarp Happy  I started another in my ongoing works made from scarps.  Again I am pulling fabric from a box of material from my friend Ethel.   This is the forth bed sized quilt  from this box.  I have six of these  panel  pieces done  that I will eventually cut into small units.   I  think it will take over 25   panels to do the quilt  so I am just at the beginning of a  long process.

Label Cards- Sing your Song    When I was working on my cards this week I was aware that each of us is unique and we need to all celebrate that uniqueness.   Sing one’s own song is an important part of that.

 Fashion   As our culture grows and changes so too do our ideas of what is fashionable.  I an glad I did not live in a time when ones undergarments included  this much confinement.

Busy Summer Time

Hello,
We are enjoying summer, with lots of rain. I can’t grow Black-eyed Susans, there are from my neighbors yard, but I can grow fairy rings (

They only last a day though. There were so many things going on this week I did not do much work. I just seemed to collect ideas and memories to use later an reflect on all the experiences that I have been going through. One needs to take stock every now and then.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I went with Liz to Percilla’s sale last Friday. We both purchased jackets.   It was fun and we are both delighted to have our one of a kind works to wear this fall.

On Saturday I went to the Northeast Felt Makers Association as Angela’s guest. We took a workshop on making small felted cards. Angelas’s cards. I have not done any wet felting in a while and I had forgotten how much the roving can move and change with the felting process. I did two small cards. Now we both need to add needle felting for detail and some embroidery to further that process. It was fun and I have joined the group and hope this helps

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tue was meeting day for me. I went to the QuEG’s meeting in the morning. We did not meet in July so folks had lots to share. Sally has been working on this beautiful blue and white piece. She is a master of machine embroidery.

 

 

 

 

 

Sue Ellen went to QBL but she was not a t all happy with her piece so I did not take a photo. She did have this delightful little work to share with us though.

 

Liz showed the piece she did in Rosalie’s class on Matisse. It sure captures his love of color and simplicity of shape.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Angela had been printing on fabric with dye. She is staying true to her tapa cloth symbols although the colors are her own. I love what she is doing.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

I went to Susan’s for the afternoon and we did some plant printing. I had fun and I am sure some great stuff will grow from this bit of raw material building along with my other stuff.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Diva meeting was stimulating as usual.  Noel showed us her entry for Quilts = Art =Quilts and her latest Collaged Lady.
Susan shared her shelf garden pieces that she has been painting. They are so soft and light like the real flowers.
Donna had great works in progress for her solo show in Oct , but I did not take nay good photos of that work. It was a good meeting as usual and I went home inspired.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Progress Report: Yak This is a project from my class with Jeannette Newberryi from QBL. It is 13″w X 15.5″ t. I really like the effects and will transfer the ideas to my own work in the future.

Mulberry Memories I mostly work on the trees and grass on this work this week. I am ready to paint and add more imagery to the surface now too.

Cards: Nature   I believe this quote because I know I can always take a short walk our of doors to put things back in perspective for myself.  It really works.

Taking stock

 

Hello,

We are beginning to enjoy the wonders of summer.   These poppies are in Susan’s garden and look wonderful.    This was the first full week of June and I had three meetings.   QuEG’s meant on Tuesday morning.  It was a small group but folks had lots to share.IMG_1191Linda  C  is working on a baby quilt for her niece.   Elephants are the nursery theme.  Liz is working on her transparency piece and it is looking good.   IMG_1199Sue Ellen is playing with her collection on non cotton fabrics. IMG_1192 And there is a row by row project in the works too.

I went from the meeting to Moravia and spent a wonderful afternoon working with Susan.  We then went off to the Diva meeting where more things were cooking. IMG_1207Donna has a new batch of mirrors that she has completed.  She sure knows how to use Fimo effectively.     IMG_1209Lori is creating portraits with her needle now.     Noel is doing portraits too- but with quilt a different bent.   Her fabric faces are stretch and very whimsical.

IMG_1216Yesterday I went off to the FAB meeting.  Judy and Patti are knitting like crazy and Sharon has finished her Relative quilt now.

Because of all these meetings I spent a lot of time in the car alone.   This plus sorting through work looking for a specific piece brought up some issues.     Susan wisely said of reworking pieces one is “playing with your younger self.”   What a grand way to look at the process of redoing works that do not quite make the grade.       Time away from work allows one to look with new eyes at the pieces and I often see things I wish I had done differently.    I can spot the problems in some cases too.   In my sorting and musing I have decided I will return to some works in the hope of making them stronger.

Progress Report: Perception Daily    This work is 30” w X 46” l.   It is a part of the text series .     One of the challenges that Liz and I made for our selves this year was to use some of the fabric that we hand dyed.   All the material except the dark turquoise fabric in the background is something that I altered.    IMG_1255   I did reflective quilting around all the words after I had raw edge appliqued down the words. IMG_1258

Daily Practice I   I finally stretched all the finished Daily Practice work  this week.   This piece is 18″ w X 24″ l. IMG_1238   The base of this one is a piece of fabric that was a wipe  up cloth at one of my print sessions last summer.   The lace is from grandmothers collection and I hand dyed it last summer as well.IMG_1239

 

 

Daily  Practice II       This piece is 16″ w X 18″ l.      The base for this work is several  trimmed tans that  looked good together.    IMG_1232  This piece has lots of buttons on it for textural contrast.IMG_1233

Daily Practice III      This work is 18″ w X 24″ l.   The purple background is a commercial fabric and all the other material added on top is some I have altered.   They are also scraps left over from other projects.    IMG_1247  I have always been fascinated by negative space and in using those negatives this way they become positive spaces.   Stitches and pompoms are the textural elements of this piece. The  orange part  base of the  background isone of the  shibori projects Liz and I tried last summer.   The metal flowers are from Carol.

Rocky Shore I worked forward on Water – the class assignments this week.   The hand painted   sky and  water have been stitched down and the three different types of foam have also been applied.IMG_1227    One foam is made from Angelina, a second is florist plastic that was painted with opalescent paint and the third was a textured plastic ribbon that I ironed.     I will move on to the next element next week and finish all the elements at the end of the class.

 

IMG_1261Mulberry Memories    This work has become a problem for me.  I tried to put too much into the top for the size of the piece.     It has become impossible for the viewer to “read”.     Therefore I have decided to scarp this  particular  work and start again using the same ideas plus a few others and create two or perhaps  a  three units  to represent this time and geography  of my life.     We lived in this location for 5 years and there are lots of memories.

Ravens  I thought that this work was finished last week and I presented it as such.  But a  second study this week as convinced me that it needs more quilting.   The gals at QuEGs pushed this idea too.   So I am taking the time to make these additions.

IMG_1251Persuasion I have been busy doing pebble quilting on this  text piece.   I am ready to start reflective quilting on it now.

Dad’s Barn  I came across the orange and yellow base in one of my boxes from  Ethel.  I pinned it to the pin wall and it hung there for several weeks.  In thumbing through a sketchbook I came across of the old barn on Dad’s Farm and though I would like to do a work about that.  The two came together.  I also wanted to do some more thread painting  so I drew our some swallows on wash away and started them.IMG_1185   After the backs were done I added the chest and beaks.IMG_1187   I have learned that I do not need to do the legs as they are so slender that they do not hold up well after washing and they seldom are in the position I want so I add them when I put the work together.     The birds are washed and dried and ready for mounting on the image.  I need to decide how I am going to add one of them to the work now.

 

 

 

New Work IMG_1225I am trying to pay attention to shape and contrast with this work.  It is made up of mostly the cut-away’s  of several  older pieces.    Again my love of the negative spaces.

Label Cards Modern    I became weary of the word Modern when I was about 10.  I was helping Mom and Aunt Marci clean grandfather’s cabin.  We were taking  The books off the shelf sorting and dusting them.     I came a pone  one called “ Modern Science” and I flipped it open.  It revealed a drawing of  all of the parts of atom with the Neutrons, Protons and Electrons labeled.   Knowing there were more I decided to always  be wary of things labeled as “Modern”.

Self Knowledge     One develops an understanding that they are unique entities separate from others at a  young age.    But the real development of self acceptance takes years and for some never occurs.

Spring Has Come

Hello,

Spring has come to central New York with a burst of color and warmth.    This Bloodroot blossomed this week  after several cold days when I could see the buds tightly  furled.   It is  wonderful.   I am rally enjoying my walks now.  Liz's drawingMay day was the first Tuesday of the month and I had meetings.   The QuEG’s  meant and we had a good talk.  Liz showed off her sketchbook where she had altered some of  the pages that she  printed at Regina’s last week.     Linda's JewerlyLinda wowed us with her wonderful jewelry.   It is good to have her back in central NY.

Then I went off to the Diva meeting .  Again I got lots of stimulation.  Lliese  did this work during the gray days of April.  Tulips are always cheerful.  It is painted silk.   IMG_0935  Noel is making baby quilts as her brood expands.     This one is created from Liberty of London fabrics.  Anne is also dealing with the transition from winter to spring with this work.   The weather sure effects lots of us.IMG_0941  Cheri continues to develop her stencil/layers of painting style.   I like what she is doing and know she is challenging herself.     She is also exploring uses of the wash away from our fall class.  The Lavender in the center of this work is machine thread drawing.

  This is also a work by Alice.  She does great work with crows as so many of us do who live here in central NY where they are abundant. IMG_0952IMG_0953  Lori, Christen and Ruth all took a workshop on the use of fusibles and did some wonderful flower work.    Lori is working on her embroidery on a woven background too.IMG_0957

  Sharon also shared some of her work with us.    It was a lively meeting with lots  wonderful ideas.

Yesterday was a FAB meeting and sense we had not gotten together sense March we had a lot to share too.  This is a new piece by Judy and she is hand quilting it now.  She also finished her the  topIMG_0968that she started at camp last fall.     We too had a lively conversation.    Judy was given a top that she passed on to Sharon who fell in love with it.IMG_0969 I am so fortunate to have so many great folks to support me.

Progress Report: Asters  This work is 33” w X 33.5”l.   It is all raw edge appliqued down.  IMG_0993The center’s of the flowers are  hand appliqued  circles.   Some of the leaves are hand painted fabrics. IMG_0994The vein’s of the leaves are all stitched down with two threads in the same needle on the sewing machine.

Collection  This work is  17”w X 27”l.     One of the little challenges that I put up for myself this year was to create a work that is based on a article  from Quilting Arts.   This is one  from last month.  IMG_0982  I had a good time layering up the stacks of fabric and objects to create this work.IMG_0984

Black-capped Chickadee   This work is 12” X 12” and stretched.     I am working on backgrounds for the other birds too.

 

NEWIMG_0977 This is a new exploration using text as my starting point.  The word is “NEW” and far too visible and poor in composition for this to be the final lay out – but it is a start.

Riotous Romp   This is also a text based start.  The word is New- done in a cursive curvy style. ( check last week for the shape) I have zig-zag appliqued down the letters and I have started to reflective quilt the central part of this work.   It has a curvy cut background.

NewIMG_0975   I built this background this week too.  Again I have no direction as to what I want to do with this surface.  I thought I could use the cut-ways from Riotous Romp as a start- but that idea was awful…..

 Card: Odyssey  I am still making little cards and enjoying the collaging process.  The moon is in constant change and watching the constant change of mankind’s  history unfold too.

April Melt

Hello,

We are deep into the spring melt in this part of the world.  Eric and I stopped at Chittagong on our way home on Sunday to check the falls.  It was  so loud that we had to yell at one another to be herd.  The  experience sure was an adrenaline rush and all we did was look and feel the spray on our faces.     Water is a powerful force in nature.

IMG_0763This week was the first Tuesday of the month so I had meetings.   QuEGs meant at Angela’s house this time and we had a lot to share.   SueEllenSue Ellen is making twin bed quilts for her nieces and nephews.   This one is for the six year old and I think he will like the bright colors.

NotebookCorrine is doing leather notebooks now and this is just one of  five that she shared.  They are beautiful I think.

Sally is doing a wonderful flower series and she had four of them to share with us. Her hand work is beautiful!

Then I went off to the Diva meeting with Noel. IMG_0769   This shot is one of her fabric collages.    She said sometimes it takes an hour to find and eyebrow  for a piece.  What a challenge.

Liesa is knitting puppets for her grandchildren.  This one sure has personality. IMG_0778

Lori is doing a class where she is making lots of samples of stitches.  This work fits her life at the moment. IMG_0780   It is good to have a reference points  for further work.

Regina took two felting workshops this month and did great projects.    As is her style she jumps into things with both feet.   I think this shawl is   beautiful.IMG_0777In workshop  2 she learned how to create a bag.  This is her design and it hast two pockets in it.  One on the inside and one on the back.     She felted the handle too   I sure am lucky to have such talented and stimulating friends.

Progress Report:   Asters

The leaves are all attached now.  I made faced circles the size of quarters for the centers of the flowers this week too.  Now I am ready to begin the purple petals for those flowers.

 

 

 

 

Dill  I am ready to add the seed heads on the tops of the plants now.  Then I can stretch   the piece and do the finishing.

 

 

 

Memory Map: Carroll Iowa   I painted the street map and the outside of the house on organza  this week for this project.  Now I need to work on the other parts and add them too.  I will not stitch anything down to the base until I have them all in place so I can shuffle them  if I need to.

 IMG_0790Fiddle Head Ferns    This project is creeping along.  I got the idea to feature  the Fiddle Head Ferns  last week at the Social Art meeting when one of the women though  my Indian Pipes were the ferns.  So I did a bit of research and they are a similar shape although quite a different color.     I dyed the white pipe cleaners  green and wrapped them part way up with a green fabric to create the young ferns.     I think it will work when I build up the background a bit more and add mature ferns too.

Daily Practice II  This work is nearly complete.     I seem to be  at a  sort of at a stand still  on this one.   So I will pin it to the stretcher bars before I stop  work to see how it appears.    I hope that action will tell me what needs more attention.

IMG_0788  W Block  This block is for a group project were each block is to have a W in it.  It for a friend who is battling cancer and the W is to represent wellness.      I plan to free motion write lots of word of encouragement around the letter.

Cards   I got a little carried away this week.   I was still so full of adrenalin when we got home from the falls visit  that I made this card in  no time.   One can never tell just what will inspire one.

    I    then rushed forward and did Perhaps  followed by Extraordinary.     Sometimes one just is  just the conduit for the  art action.

Moving Forward

Hello, The wet heavy snow this week really effected the landscape.  We got about 17 inches and it really ground things to a halt.  But by Monday the world was almost normal at least for March.   IMG_0504  I got a bit of cheer with these tulips from my friend Joyce.    The first Tuesday of the month came this week so I had meetings.  The QuEG’s meant at Sue Ellen’s.  She had a lot to share as she is working on a commission.     This shot is of the sun  set  she is working on.  All the rows are cut- but not connected yet and there is a sea to add on the bottom.     I look forward to seeing how this turns out.   IMG_0511Liz is pulling up her UFO’s and working on this long lost piece.

The Diva’s also had a lot to share.IMG_0512  Liesa is doing great things with the marbleized fabric she has created.

Sharon is busy creating now that she has  finished Graduate school .    I really like the colors she has put together here.

 

 

 

 

Cheri showed off her DNA quilt.  She stared it in the Surfaces class we were in at the Schweinfurth last fall.   She is mixing  papers in her surfaces now too.

 

 

 

 

Regina is being as productive as ever.    This is just one of four wool birds quilts that she has created this month.  She also shared her felted scarf that is very  jewel like.  IMG_0529  I always get so much inspiration and support from all  these gals.

Yesterday the FAB group meant.  Patti showed off her loaded loom. And explained how it works.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Progress Report: Forest IMG_0558I have been beading away on my Spring Forest piece.   The colors of the beads make me feel like a season other than spring so I am going to change the name to just Forest.   It may not work so well for the Awakening show.  But I will see.

New Work The base layer is cut and pinned for this work.

.IMG_0540Most of the leaves are my own  hand dyed with a few ( the dark green ones) cut from commercial  fabrics.    I like the red brown of the vanes in the leaves  so I tried to follow that idea.  I loaded the eye of the sewing machine with a light green thread and a red thread to get this effect.  It takes about 15 to do the vanes in each leaf so it will take a while to finish this step.

Glyph IV   I keep doing the beading on this piece too.  I am more than half way down the left side of the O now.

 

 

 

 

 

Frozen   This project is  inching forward.  I think most of the rocks that are protruding through the ice are done now and I only need to concentrate of the last few ice flow patterns.  This project requires lots of looking  and thinking on my part.

IMG_0545Memory Map: Carroll    I stared a new Memory Map project.  It is the same size as the other three completed ones.   IMG_0546I spent my life from the  third grade to seventh grade in Carroll Iowa and have great memories that I will try to incorporate into this work.   This is the base layer.

Daily Practice   The hand work on this piece goes forward.   I continue to use the strait stitch as much as possible on this piece.

The Lovers   This is the next card.   I love to use old photographs when I can in my collage work.  They are not family ones but little jewels that I have picked up along the way.

Snow days

We continue to get snow here in New York.  The wind is not blowing however as the snow laden  windmill shows.   Its just the light fluffy  wet  lake effect stuff.   The snow is piling up however.  It was much nicer earlier this week and I went to the QuEGs and Diva meetings.IMG_0324   At QuEGs there were only three of us so we meant at Liz’s home and did a bit of Gelly Plate printing.      Liz says she will use some of hers to make Valentines. As a part of the season Judy Sent me a cheerful water color Valentine to celebrate too.

The Diva group  meeting   had lots of folks with lots to share.  Mary did this delightful piece of her grandson.

Progress Report: Joy II This work is 34.5” w X 39.5” t.  I am so fortunate to have a group of folks to bounce ideas off of.  I took this work to the QuEG’s meeting and they gave me some valuable suggestions.  I went home and applied them and then took the work to the Diva meeting that eve.  The gals in that group pounced it completed.   IMG_0364This close up shows where I did some of the altering.  Before I reworked this area the orange in the letters and the orange in the background where too close to the same color.  I used a colored pencil to darken the background. Double Joy   This work is 28” w X 40.5”t.    I used the cutaways from  Joy II to create this work.  I  like the vertical movement of this piece.  IMG_0367I feel the color gets a bit washed out in the full photo.IMG_0368

IMG_0356New Work I seem to be in a rework mode at the moment so I redesigned the Joy to use as a radial design for the next piece in this series.

New ZAP This word also a rework and I am playing again with.    This is a close up of the word. IMG_0352The letters are cut from some hand dyed fabric I did at a QuEGs play day a few years ago.

Glyph  IV I keep beading away on this project.  This side of the O is almost complete.

 

Indian Pipe This felted project  is at the build stage.  I am struggling along with the  integration of  the plants into the setting.   I think I have just about completed the bracken on the forest floor.   Now to work on the pipes themselves.

Frozen  This work is also proving to be a bit of a challenge at the moment.   The organza ice is on now and I need to decide where to let the stones poke through so I can build the flow patterns  around them.  I am just unsure about how to start.

 Daily Practice-Orange Essence  I have decide this daily practice work is done.  I do not know how I want to finish the series so I am setting this work aside for now .  I will begin the next one this week.

Daily Practice  This is the second work in the series, it is base before any stitching has been applied.     Again I will try to limit the number of stitches I use on this work.

IMG_0361 Scarp Happy    When I do not know what I  want to do next I keep myself in the working mood by doing a project that requires little or no thinking on my part.  I am doing that with this project as I have done many  of these scrap happys.  I pulled out the box of left over  blocks from previous  Scrap Happys and started  a new project.   I know I can always find a home for these quilts.

Collage    This is collage #5.  I am please I have kept up  this series and feel I have a routine now.   I know this   summy work is in response to the snow and cold too.   The environment really does affect my work.

Event Filled Week

This week had been one filled with events.  Last Friday  was busy as I took down the Finger Lakes Fiber Artist show a May Memorial.    Then  I went off to Oswego State University to Sharon Souva’s Graduate show.  It was wonderful.  She did a deep exploration  of four areas.   She took a photo.IMG_9945 This one is called”  Yellow Strip” and is a shot  of a part of the pavement.   She wrote a poem about each  subject.IMG_9947She then did a print of the subject.IMG_9946  This was followed by  a small rendering of the image in fabric before doing a full sized quilt on the topic.   I enjoyed seeing the progression.    Her other three topics where  IMG_9942grass growing out of a crack in the cement sidewalk.   This is the quilt.

Lastly , a quilt of  birch  bark with with lichens growing on it.   Her fabric interpretations are wonderful and inspiring.   I am so proud of her and admire the effort it took to go to school and see it to the end.

Then this wonder woman was a part of the Plow Shears craft show and sale on Sat and Sunday.   This is a shot of part of her boothIMG_9967 showing some of her landscape  fiber drawing sewing pieces.

On Sunday I went off to the Schweinfurth  to the  Finger Lakes Fiber  Artist meeting.   We talked about the Q=A= Q  show that is up and enjoyed hearing other members favorites and the why of those feelings.  At  2:00 we went up stairs   to enjoy   Bev’s trunk talk.    She was very kind with her full explanations about how she got to where she is now as well as her current process.IMG_9980It was a good  day.

Then on Tues I went off to QuEG’s and Diva meetings.   The holidays are keeping folks busy  so there was not much show and tell in either case.    Regina had finished her hand work on her circles and squares piece.  The base of this work is a piece of Shobori that she did. IMG_9989 Ruth shared   her cell work too.

  • Progress Report:   Peeling Orange    This work is 38” w X 41” l.   It is the last work that  I plant to use the Owl graffiti layout on.  It is not the  same pattern that I made in class.  I took the  idea and made it smaller to fit the orange hand dyed fabric that Regina gave to me.  There are cut-aways from other works in the series in this  piece too.   IMG_0013I am  now at the   point where I did not care if the viewer knows or can find the  the word  in the work any more.   I realized I have also become enchanted with  the little tails that sometimes end up sticking out along the edge .   I have cut them away many times- but decided I will keep some times on this work and some in the furture.IMG_0015

 

Zap It   I am now   doing the machine quilting and hand applique of the “It’s” on this quilt.     It is moving along nicely.

IMG_0004The beading goes forward on this piece.  I was so busy this week I did not get my hour in every day.   But I will keep aiming for that amount of time.

 

Zap It II  In my preparation for my own trunk show I looked at all my old pieces.   I ended up with a whole pile of not so strong work and was considering just passing it all off to other uses.  Then I remembered Ethel telling me  long ago that I made great backgrounds.   So I though perhaps I could use some of those weaker pieces as a background for the letter form explorations.     I liked one of  my line drawings of “Zap It” – so I used that  as the basis for the purple strips on the surface of this older work.   The next challenge is how I want to stitch these lines down on the surface.

Ethel’ Scarp   IMG_0006  I am ready to put together the scrap quilt now.  This is my back for this work .  It is also made from scraps.

Label Card Flexibility   When it came time to start a new card for this week I still had the “reuse” thoughts in my head  so being flexible seemed like the way to go this time.

Travel and such

  •  I have had a busy two weeks.   It all started out with traveling and visiting museums .   Marty and I visited  six different ones on our trip to Maine and back.   With  shopping, a factory tour and visiting with friends it was all very exciting and stimulating- A very enjoyable experience.   But before I went away there was a three day workshop with Amanda McCavour.   She  is an expert on the use of various water soluble materials.  I learned a lot.  She has a show  of her life sized machine drawn rooms on display at the Schweinfurth  that will run from now until the first week end in Jan.   Most of the work we did in class was much smaller. This shot is of Cheri’s peacock feather. IMG_9633 I experimented  with   creating Fox Tail for use in one of my felted pieces.     Doing this workshop with fifteen others creative women made for lots of different and  exciting applications  to the use of this material.
  • The Quilts =Art= Quilts  2017 opened on Sat at the Schweinfurth too and so I went to the opening as I was already in the building.  This work is by Elizabeth Bush.  She won a Jurors Choice award as did  my friend, Julia.   IMG_9647This work by Emily was done by one of the other gals in Amanda’s class.  She came all the way fro California to be at the opening and to take the class.    It’s a strong show and I plan at least three more visits.

Then on Monday morning with the help of Cheri, Julia and Liz we hung a Finger Lakes Fiber Artist show at May Memorial Church  3800 Genesee St, in Syracuse.  This shot is of  a work by Sharon.  IMG_9658  These works show  two quilts  by Regina and a piece by Alice.     There was a Meet the Artist event on Sunday and that went well.   The contact at  May was very pleased.

  Marty and I  visited the Sherborn Museum  as one of our early stops on our trip to Maine.  We were blown away by the work of Patty Yoder who did wonderful hooked wall pieces.  She raised the sheep, sheared them, spun the wool and dyed it before she cut it into strips to create  beautiful and playful wall pieces with it.  IMG_9677  This is a close up of the eye of the sheep in the first photo.     There was lots of humor and  fun in  this  delightful show and we enjoyed it very much.

  • IMG_9695Our next  stop was the Ben and Jerry’s Ice cream factory.  We took the tour and had ice cream Sundays for lunch that day.    I  Loved their motto” If it’s not fun- why do it?”
  • IMG_9709 We went on to visit our friend  Elizabeth.  We enjoyed visiting her studio and talking about her work.  This shot is of a colorful basket full of the hats she makes to give away at Christmas.
  • IMG_9713  The next day we went on to Camden to visit with Barb and Steve.  Barb took us to Rockland and the Farnsworth museum.  We hurried through the Wythe art  works as we had seen them  before and went to a great show of wok by Marguerite Zorach.   No photos where allowed, but take my word for it – the works was fabulous.    The photos is of the black and white show, another temporary exhibit that was up in the museum.  We also visited  the  Center for Maine Contemporary Art.     The last museum we visited before we drove home  was  the Clark, where we saw the exhibit of Impressionist Line and  listened to the lecture on that subject.   I did not know that pastels were invented around the same time those artists were working.  Degas and Mary Cassatt sure used that new material.
  • Tuesday was the first one of November so I had both the QuEG’s meeting and the Diva meeting.   This quilt is by Liz and will be for sale at the Everson’s  Christmas Tree event.   IMG_9737 Angela continues to work away at her on line felting class.  I really like this piece.    Sally is busy with Christmas gifts for her grand daughtersIMG_9742and Sue Ellen is having fun doing cats.
  • The Divas had a good meeting as well.  Regina did a splendid job Finishing off her Garden Gate piece.  I love how she combined  a rubbing with a hand dyed to get this great look.IMG_9747Maureen is working with colored pencils and stitching on this piece.  Most folks had work in various stages of completing in preparation for the Thread of Change Show at the Unitarian Church in Ithaca  to open Dec 1.
  • The to round things out I had a FAB meeting yesterday.   Judy is working away on her red sweater again now that it is cold.  Nancy is making “post cards”  to attach to her quilt.     It has been a full two weeks.

Progress Report:  Glyph IV  Because I was away not a lot of progress has been made here.  But I am working away to fill in the L with beads now.

Peeling Orange I have started zig –zagging down the  shapes on this project.   I am still thinking about how I want to quilt it.

IMG_9757Zap   I did start to applique the shapes down – but had to remove all I had done as it puckered up.  I purchased tear away and now I am ready to try again.

KnittingIMG_9763Winter cold has finally found us.  I could not find my muffler,   so I decided to knit one as I still have not focused on a evening hand project.

Felted work   I made this rock face a while back and thought that I would use the Fox  Tail from Amanda’s class on the surface.  But I think they are too close in value to get the effect I am shooting for.   So they will be a part of another project and I will work on a different idea for this piece.

IMG_9749 Label Card “ Share the credit.”  I have been thinking about how important  it is to work together for a big goal and value all the different things one brings to  projects.  I was trying to express that with this card.

Water Main Break

  Hello,

One of the  big excitements for this week was a water main break on Sunday morning.   I was washing up after making muffins and suddenly no water came out of the tap.   I looked out the kitchen window to see the road full of muddy water.    I went out doors and discovered the gal across the street  had just called the water department. The water was bubbling up and running down the street- it overwhelmed the street drains  and ran all the way down to the park – four blocks away. IMG_9390  The water was so powerful it cracked and threw up the street.   The men came in about 20 min and turned off the water.  A little later they were followed by a  repair crew who started about 9.    First they broke up the tar via and cleared away all the mud and stone to expose the pipe so they could replace it.IMG_9393  The whole was about 8 feet deep and 10 feet wide.  It was huge.  They cut away the broken area of the pipe and then put in a new section.  It was about 3:30 by that time.   Then they began to fill in the whole with loads of stone.  It took four trips with dump trucks full to do that job.   Lastly after 9 in the evening they patched over the  filled opening with tar via.   There was lots of mud on the street and the street sweeper made five runs up and down the road to get it up on Monday – but it is still dusty here.

IMG_9437This shot of a side walk that got flooded and is still muddy this morning when I walked.   The street sweeper could not get to that space.   It was  quite and adventure.

FAB meant here last week too.  Marty came as she is in town.  She brought  her newest little project.IMG_9383

Patty had just finished a new scarf that she shared with us.  I think it is grand- only knit and pearl she tells us.   Judy brought one of her Disappearing Four Patch blocks that she started  up at camp when we were there. IMG_9382It was a good meeting and we all had fun.

The  first  Tuesday  of the month came this week so I had QuEG’s and Diva meetings too.

 

IMG_9398Angela is taking an on line class in felting and having a grand time.  She showed us about ten pieces she  had done already.  These two show different wools on the left and adding  different silks on top of the second one.Linda is finishing up this “ Almost Black and White “ top.   IMG_9406   Sally is working away on Christmas gifts and this bag she made was full of them- hand bags,   soft toy bags and such.  She dose great work.IMG_9404Corrine had this wonderful bracelet to share.  She made it from and exchange she did at a conference where she traded a great luggage tag for the charms.

 

  Before I went to the Diva meeting, I stopped and had a little private  visit to the Rock Garden Show in Homer.   Cheri and Terri- the gallery guru  show me through.   They both  had work there of course.   Cheri’s was one she started in the class she and I were in with Kerr at QBL.   IMG_9411   Terri’s work is much larger and full of texture.   It is a great little show with nine artists  and wonderful work.   IMG_9409  This work is Cheri’s too.

The Diva’s were hopping as well.   Lori had this wonderful little bag to share with us.  She did it for her entry for the Embroidery Guild of American  2017 challenge.   She got feed back on several other  stamped and hand dyed projects that she is working on.

 

 

 

 

Alice has  almost completed her Mary Colter quilt for the Woman Museum.    It looks great.

 

 

 

Liesa has  completed her quilt for the “Threads of Change  Show”.   Let Us Stay-is wonderful commentary I think.

IMG_9427Regina  wowed us again with all her indigo dyeing.  She is creating up a storm of beautiful work.

Anne has finished “ Blind In justice”   her work on the American’s with Disabilities Act.    All those brail dots are three dimensional.

IMG_9430 Ruth’s wave is moving along as she wants it finished for the  quilt show  this week end.     It was a powerful meeting and I enjoyed my self .  Came home all hipped up again.

The other thing I tried this week was dyeing with wall nuts.  IMG_9384It is great fun and I got some real nice browns.

Progress report: Buggy   I am to the reflective quilting stage on this project.  I  added two more oil stick stenciled insects to  it this week too.

Glyph IV  IMG_9449I just keep putting in my hour a day on this project.  It is moving forward.

Quartered Glyph   I started this one up  at camp.  I am ready to start assembling the  four units now that I have trimmed away the second layer.    The Cut aways are so beautiful that  I may need to do another  work using these shapes and  pieces. IMG_9450

Pond Water   This project has become my short term evening project.  I am hand quilting it so this is a good replacement for the time being.   I do have a new nightly project in mind however.

IMG_9432Card   Make Believe  This is my newest card.   I am so distressed by the shooting in Los Valgus that I want to escape into make believe.  Thank goodness I have art as a way of getting away into my own world .

Label Block quilt.  All the blocks are assembled now.   I will stitch in the ditch quilt it and finish the job.
